Hey guys, I just CANNOT seem to settle on one scope. I am looking to do some big bore air rifle hunting (its not "just an airgun", I dare you to go shoot a .308 DAQ - that'll change your mind about airguns =) at around 100 yards, as well as some paper punching at around 100-150 yards. I cant seem to decide on the Bushnell Trophy 6-18x40 or the Legend 5-15x40. I am also open to other recommendations as long as they are under $270.
Thanks for your help, -Dave Edited by AirHunter |

Does a big bore air rifle have the same negative effects on a scope that a standard air rifle does? If so, I am not sure whether or not either of these scopes will hold up.

No, this particular gun does not have the same effect as say a high powered (or any) springer would have on the scope.

What the heck is a .308 DAQ? I have never heard of big bore air guns. Do you have any pics???? Sounds interesting. How loud is it?

To answer your question. The Trophy is a better scope and a favorite for airgunners. It is air gun rated and one time they were marketed as airgun scopes, but people thought they could not use them on centerfire so they switched marketing plans.

The gun is pretty loud, I dont have decible readings of it, so kind of hard to compare it to other things. I myself dont have a picture of the gun but if you go to google and type in ".308 DAQ (DAQ stands for Dennis Quakenbush, who customly makes each gun) their will be a picture of a 100 pound boar taken with one. This is not a rare thing to happen either, many people boar hunt with these, I have even seen someone take a huge elk with one.

at 231 feet with a 129-grain bullet moving approx. 780 fps. One shot just above the right shoulder broke the boar's spine. |

During the Napoleonic Wars, Austrian snipers were armed with a air rifles that were so effective that the users were executed if captured. This is one of the first documented case that I know of, of troops performing a specially trained and designated sniper roll. Kind of strange that it was with a high-end Daisy.

Airhunter, how loud is this 308 DAQ rifle? I've never heard of big bore airguns, but they seem pretty cool. Is it louder than a normal rimfire 22LR rifle?
Thanks. Ilya |

Hrm...Kind of hard for me to say as I haven't heard that many RF being shot before. I dont think its as loud as a RF but they are pretty loud. There are also some airguns that are more powerful (all custom made) but I cant remember the guys name who makes them right now. As for the .308 DAQ, go to Bigboreairguns.com and click on Dennis's site (the maker of the gun). From what I hear he is just about to release a new batch of the .308s.
Airgunnning is VERY fun and VERY addictive, I suggest you guys go buy a Beeman R9 or some other spring air rifle, you will be hooked. Its a great hobby with lots of good people, and you can do it in your backyard. Once you can shoot a spring air rifle well, I will guarantee you will be able to shoot your other rifles better. -Dave Edited by AirHunter |

Is your 308 DAQ quiet enough to practice in the backyard without
disturbing your neighbors? I looked at Dennis's website. I'll
probably give him a call. It sounds interesting.

No its definatley not quiet enough to shoot in your backyard. Almost all airguns but this one (or any big bores) would be quiet enough to shoot in your backyard. A great starting gun would be a Beeman R9 (springer). Or if you feel like shooting a PCP (pre-charged pneumatic) I would recommend the Air Arms S400, shoots .22's at around 950 FPS, and is EXTREMELY quiet, sometimes I even wonder if I shot or not. Its very, very accurate. I have had 1/2'' groups at 100 yards.
Airguns are no longer "toys" they are very powerful and very accurate. They are great for taking out pest birds, squirells, racoons (would need a PCP for a coon) and if you really get into it (like me) you can buy .308 DAQ's for large game.
