hi,

I have tried to google and research on this forum for the answers to my queries, what disadvantages are there, if any when using scopes above 20x in power?

The only obvious down side I can see is the fiew of view is reduced.

Application is for long range shots say 500 - 1000 yards.

thanks

your light gathering ability changes when the magnification goes up the higher the power the less light that gets to your eye is one i can think of.

also, a 'mirage' effect can happen at higher power ranges

A 10x scope at 1000 yds is like looking at 100 yds with open sights which should be workable.

A 20x scope at 1000 yds is like looking at 50 yds with open sights.

The 20x42 super sniper at $299 is a good way to see if you really like that kind of magnification, just expect the glass to go grey as the sun goes down. To get an idea of the difference take a 3-9x40 scope out just before dark and look at 9X then look at 6X to see how much difference there is in brightness.

42mm divided by 6x  = 7mm exit eye pupil size amount of light

42        /           ;   9x  = 4.6

42        /           ;  20 X = 2.1 exit eye pupil size amount of light

Have you tried to hand hold anything bino etc at 20x , that high is only good if you are useing some kind of rest. I have a 20 x scope & a set of 20x binos .

The scope is good for shooting from my portable rest the binos not much good for any hunting use only checking paper.

there is no difference in the shake between 6x and 20x . the shooter is just tricked into thinking its not there. in fact 20 are just alot in long range off hand metallic target shooting for just this reason, if you can get any part of the cross hair on the target -- you will hit it. in off hand silhoutte shooting refinement for group size is a little different than bench shooting and things like "wobble areas" are part of the training program

decreases in fov are more than made up for by better target definition.

the main difference is speed of target acquisition. and if this is your main concern.

Very true but you don`t notice it at 2 or 3 X and you will find out how much you shake at 20x or with a 45x target scope.

thanks everyone, you have made some very valid points,

I have used 20x bionoculars, and come to think of it yes they were quite heavy.
