Chris or SWFA staff,
Whats the scoop on the ATN 10x65Z-Army Mil-Dot.... I recently saw one at the range on a Sako TRG-42 custom tactical in 300 win. The owner didn't seem to be the friendliest guy, and since he was with some buddies I didn't bother to ask much other than what it was. The answer made me think I was dumb and that everyone knows what these odd looking scopes are and how good they are... To me it looked like a cross between a spotting scope and a periscope? Are they really all that good? |

number one i doubt they are that good... look at all the sniper teams in the world few if any use obj over 56mm... and i bet if there are any that use a 65mm obj they probably dont use an atn but i dont know much either so yah

Thanks guys, I suspected as much...
It really seemed to break the rules of what a good scope should be because it must have two mirrors between the objective lense / tube and eyepiece / tube... I think its owner must have bought it because it does look very high tech in a hollywood sort of way... like i said ... the guy had a real attitude which really wasn't justified concidering the size groups he was shooting. ( I had my spotter on his target for a while ) But isn't that the way it always seems to go? |

I doubt it has mirrors. It probably just has a porro prism similar to a porro binocular. I am not sure that I like that in a scope though. From what I understand ATN scopes have pretty spotty quality control and porros are not easy to align perfectly and still be robust. Low magnification range scopes from them seem to be a bit more consistent than more expensive models. I've talked to a lot of people about these scopes and the consensus seem to be that their high magnification models are truly dual purpose scopes: if the optics fail and the company is not real keen to stand behind their product (which apparently has happened) it can used as a club very effectively. The darn things are huge and heavy; I would not want to be hit over the head with one.

We don't sell much ATN and don't offer this one and have never been asked about it until now. Really funky looking. Overall their quality is average. Their scopes are very involved technologically and I feel that is why you hear of so many malfunctioning.
The ATN 10x65Z-Army Mil-Dot is not and evolution but a revolution, not an improvement, but a breakthrough. For years the best names in optics were aspired to produce a balanced large aperture tactical scope. Large aperture renders into large Exit Pupil. Large Exit Pupil means longer operating hours and better performance in low light conditions and in "stressed" environments. Nevertheless, the "let's get a Big Hunting scope and put a Mil-Dot in it then call it "Tactical" approach always led to a problem with uncomfortably high mounting. The new ATN 10x65Z-Army Mil-Dot prismatic design solves all these problems, and allows a sniper to use a scope with a 65mm aperture that sits closer to the barrel than a standard 40mm scope. With a sharp crisp image, workable size, high durability and an abundance of features like an illuminated Army Mil-Dot reticle, interchangeable Bullet Drop Compensator for five different calibers, "willnot- bump" eye relief and parallax adjustment the ATN 10x65Z is a standard not an option for LE marksmen and military snipers alike. |
