Last night I was mounting a new scope on an old rifle that I had inherited from my grandfather.  This rifle had twist in medium Redfield rings from the 1960s.  I compared these old rings to a new set of twist in medium Leupold rings.  I was amazed at just how little steel is used compared to the rings of the past.  The Redfields were literally twice as large and they felt 2-3 times heavier.  These were some very beefy rings by today's standards.  I have to say I prefer the old ones.  They have held up for literally thousands of shots on a .30-06 for over a 40 year period.  I like Leupold rings and they would probably last as long, but their is something comforting in those big old hunks of ancient steel.
