Just received my new lot of 168 HPBT/match....Been loading this round for 5 years....Nothing has changed except for the lot of bullets...My Bonanza benchrest seater die is leaving a "compression" ring where it meets the bullet, has never happened before... Im loading Sierra Matchking and Nosler/ Custom Competition as usuall without leaving this ring...The Nosler has a thin jacket(J-4) and is good to go..Anybody know if Hornady is fooling arround with "jacket science" ???
Welcome all theories, 30 |

Good observation, 30. You mention the Nosler jacket and this might be the case, a thinner jacket. Also, the ogive might have been changed in their match bullet. I've never compared the Hornady to other match bullets but the ogive has always "appeared" to be longer. If they bumped it out to, let's say, to match the Sierra profile that could be a cause too.

Tahqua, Im trully looking at this thing...The hornady profile is the longest of the 3 I mention, it caused me to look to see if the seater was at dead length, but even if it was it would crunch the "tip" before leaving this compression ring...Same powder&weight, brass, same OAL, ......The charge of 4350 is "slightly" compressed as it always is, this has to be a jacket issue..?? WELL ,I just put the bullet between my teeth and left a minor impression, cant guage it to anything though, Ive never done this test.....

I get the compression ring alot always chalked it off to the cheap RCBS dies I usually buy. (get a lot of stuck cases, easier just to buy a new set than try the ole' drill a tap RCBS tinker toy stuff). The worst offenders are 75 gr VMax when using a 22 seater, I usually switch it out for a 6mm or "bevel" the inside ring of the seater, if not it crushed the nose just below the plastic.

hot30, I see this on occasion as well, but the compression rings I get are really just witness marks on the surface that don't seem to have any effect on performance of the bullet in any way. Are the rings you're seeing dents that can physically be felt or measured, or just surface marks? If the former, I would try beveling the seater as Dale suggests. If the latter, I wouldn't worry about it, as the mark is only cosmetic. |

The deformed 75's were symmetrical and no effect on accuracy, didn't measure the bc. Also had this on 168's but didn't affect them.
Gotta do this-----WELL ,I just put the bullet between my teeth and left a minor impression, cant guage it to anything though, Ive never done this test..... Is this what they mean by "biten the bullet"???? |

Thought this was something new.. I guess not.. The only thing that puzzles me is the Hornady never did this before..I guess the next thing to look at is point of impact, if it is grouping for the better I will submit a design change to Hornady.. Yes Rifledude, these are compression rings, I can stick my thumb nail in them..
Every thing that is still connected to me is pretty much "used up".. My teeth and jaw muscles are still quite unremarkable..Dale, maybe I should try to "pull" bullets next .. |

talked to hornady, nothing has changed except for the profile..it has become more pointed...forster is aware of this problem and is currently working to fix it..the answer for now is a J-30 seating stem which should handle most of the problems in this area..

As long as we are on this hornady thing, anybody shoot their A-MAX bullet lately..?? Looks like it could double as a match bullet, gosh !! I mean yes everybody shoots it,
but when your not hunting with it, its has to be a great long range bullet Edited by hot30 |

the a-max is not a match bullet, but it seems with poly tip
it would have a bc close to the closed point bullet the long-rangers are currently developing 30 |

I can't help with your problem but a friend who shoots camp perry says the 75 Hornady helps him shoot with 2moa less windage than the the guys using 77 Sierras. My gun LOVES the 77 Sierras but I only shoot factory ammo in my 223. Good luck with your handloads. |

The amax is as much a match bullet as any other bullet-since the term is only a marketing phenomena. It your gun shoots some bullet into 1/4" that is a match bullet for that gun. It is as much a match bullet as Barnes or as much is a Berger is a game bullet. If the manufa. says so then it is, if some shooter wins a match with a "game" bullet etc. etc. ad nauseum. An outstanding set up is a .233AI with fast twist and 75's on game even though its a "match" bullet. Berger now advertises their VDL as a game bullet, and Barnes tsx are coming with a match bullet sticky-0n. I use 75 Amax in a 1x9 Kimber .223 works great. (why not just go to a 22-250 with fast twist?? it would just be a 87 gr 6mm by another name). Also use 155 AMx in AR10T-308 with great results (the formal target shooting crowd loves Lapua's 155 gr) Experiment-- have fun. |
