Which one of these semi-auto hunting rifles do you guys or gals suggest I choose. I own a few bolt actions but I have the urge to buy a semi-auto hunting rifle. I have handled both and like them both so I have decided to buy the one you guys or gals help me decide on with your knowledge of these rifles. Thanks Ahead!

I have testfired 3 Bennelis. One in .30-06 and two in 9,3x62. The accuracy was poor, abouth 3-4MOA. The reliability was even worse.
The triggerpull and the machining on R1 is wonderfull, but that doesent compensate....
Of all the BARs i have testfired they have shot very good, and the latest one .300 WSM had 1/2 MOA accuracy and none of them have had any reliability problems. So of the two you meantioned I find BAR as the only choise.
Next semi i am testing is the Merkel, and they have made some interesting improvements so this should be fun.

Regarding R1. I have only tried a different variety of Norma, winchester, Sako, Lapua, Sellier & Bellot, PMC ammunition, but no handloads. If a gun (espesially at that price) don't shoot near acceptable i can't see any reasons to use handloads. A gun magazine here in sweden tried it out with loads of ammunition and the only round that fired near decent results was old winchester 220 grain bullets. I know a handfull of people that have owned R1 and sold them due to accuracy problems, and currently I don't know of any owners anylonger. But it's possible that there is american ammunition that fits the gun better than the brands i tried. Typical problem we had with R1 9,3x62 four rounds, with one or two holes far from the others. I suspected that the problem was the Buris eurodiamond scope, so after tried with a swarovski instead the groups was reduced from 4" to 3". The R1 .30-06 didnt show the same problem.
With fully loaded magazine was the bolt unable to push the round into the chamber. And this was with a cleacn nicely lubricated gun...............
The patch measures 17x17mm. This group was shot with the BAR in .300 wsm. and it was not only one group, almost all groups with that gun was very impressive. I agree that BAR triggers are unaceptable bad, but i know that a good gunsmith can get them fairly decent.
