trying to set up my 11 year old in 22 silo shooting, first match next weekend. just got a nikon bushmaster 6-18 with side focus,,,,i have a BSA "something" 8-24 power cheap scope.....anyway. the turn count lines on the nikon are hard to read,,,,,very close together. so close that it is confusing,,,,he is going to end up haveing to count klicks to set the range. the turret lines on the cheap BSA are clear enough for even me to read with my bad eyes..
if this works out, and my son enjoyes silo shooting, i will probably outfit him with another rifle/scope combination.
Might any of you Fellows suggest a good scope with max power around 18-24 with a good easy to read turn indicator on the top turret? Thanks fellows |

I just did a Google search on "silo shooting" and I get a link to this thread. What is silo shooting? It seems like you want a lot of magnification for a .22. Descriptions of what the shooting is all about would be helpful. Welcome to OT, pellet. |

Forgive me, i was refering to silhouette shooting. its a form of competition that mimics a blood sport of shooting animals. in its modern form, metal silhouetts of a chicken, wild bore, turkey and ram are used. in the scoped small bore rifle event (22 cal) the chicken(10 total) is about2 inches high and is at 131 feet, the ram is about 4 inches high and is at 328 feet. time limit is 2.5 minutes per five animals.
with the fast pace of the shoot, the widely varing ranges of the targets and the youthfullness of my 11 year old. A hand adjustable, exposed turret scope with variable magnification (this to allow higher magnification as his skills progress) is required. since the animals are static, a large field of view is not a requirement. total weight of rifle, mounts and scope has to not more than 8.5 pounds (NRA rules). the pressure of the event generally requires a fine cross hair with a 1/8 moa dot. scope would best be reset at each range to allow a point blank hold. again the pressure on an 11 year old would not allow for hold over for drop.
a scope with 1/4 moa adjustments would be better than 1/8 moa. with 1/4 moa all shots could be held point blank within one turn of the turrets. with 1/8 moa, more than one turn of the turret would be required thus the possably of error in setting the correct turns count. again this would be less likly if the turns count lines were clearly spaced and defined. which in mho are not on the nikon bushmaster.
so as i see it for my requirements
6-about 24 mag, exposed turrets perfer 1/4 moa perfer side focus AO fine cross hairs with 1/8 moa dot about 40 to perhaps 50 MM objective and be repeatable and tough enough to have the turrets adjusted four times for each event, or practice round (roughly turret could be adjusted 1856 times in a year, thats four events each month with two practice rounds twice a week) so you can see that a quality turret system is a requirement.
Thanks for any help or leads you Fellows might have.

Here is one that looks like it fullfills your requirements. http://www.swfa.com/pc-3376-307-leupold-65-20x50-vx-iii-30mm -riflescope.aspx All versions of the Leupold 6-24 are available through here http://www.swfa.com/showcategory.aspx?categoryid=307&sb= Name&so=asc&page=9 I noticed several scope brands in this range have 1/8moa. You can't go wrong with the Leupold and I would imagine SWFA has all varieties of the 6-24 in stock.

What kind of gun are using?? two schools of thought of sight picture on silo shooting-- block out (lower power scopes) and get the cross hair on some part of the target (higher powers). both use dial in-- does your club have a stage for pistols?? Experiment with different rounds, remember subsonic loads are less effected by wind drift and elevation. set for 3.5x10 leo with target knob add on.., Volquartson THS, ruger target trigger, Fajan stock

Dale, is that .22 LR? My brother has the .22 mag and it is an excellent night time coyote rig.
