Chris, I need some help. I am in the proces of buying a scope for my .308 . I was looking at the Leopold VX 2 3-9x40 and Nikon monarch series. Then I came across a a deal on a used (2003) Leopold VX 3 3.5-10 x40 (40%off )tactical w illuminated rectile . I normaly hunt in wooded areas in the early morning at late afternoonrange 100-200 yds Is tha Tactical Leopold too much scope for my use ? Is it overkill ? I am considering it because it seems like a good investment & it seems to be a good scope. |

Depends on what model it is. If it just has a black ring and target knobs it would be fine. If it is the 30mm M3 variant with 1 m.o.a elevation adjustments then it might not be the best scope. A lot of people do not like a mil dot reticle for hunting 200 yards and in because it is not necessary and only clutters your view.
We have a few 2003 models left listed on samplelist.com #2889 would work fine. |

The model is your 2896. The model is a VX III 3.5-10 x40 Long Range Illuminated Tactical . It is a 30 mm. Ir this a good investment at 40% off retail? Is it a good scope ? Should I be considering the Swaroski model 3377 or 3372 as an option ? Which is the better scope ? |

This is a very specialized tactical scope. Of course anything with crosshairs can be used to aim your rifle. The features on this scope add considerably to its weight and size. If these two factors don't bother you then will work fine. Keep in mind that the windage and elevation knobs will always be exposed and susceptible to getting turned accidentally when bumped, you do not need the 30mm tube unless you plan to shoot around 800 yards.
This scope never sold for $1124.00, that is Leupold's suggested retail price, real world price on this scope is close to what it's replacement with Index Matched Lenses sells for......$879.95 (see it here)
I would strongly suggest looking at the Swarovski choices. |
