I am looking for a scope for my CVA Optima 209 I am a slug hunter in indiana and have never used a scope before ( Cory was a great deal of

help I have a post under shotgun scopes titrled HELP!) I have been to a few gun shops looking at and through scopes and I have a few more questions any and all help I thank you.

Cory when you said 100.00 to 130.00 is not mush for a scope I see what you mean but I did look at a Nikon prostaff 3-9x40 ( if I remember right) and was very impressed with the clearity of this scope. what is your feeling on Nikons ability to produce a good scope.

and it seems Bushnell is looked at as an average scope I found that Bushnell has been in the optics business for a long time and it appears to be look at as an average scope is there quality issue with Bushnell??

and finally Leupold is this the top of the hill or is there just as good a scope out there for a 3rd the price

I read a post that a independent wrote about 7 or 8 scopes and I remember him slamming Leupold for it price can someone tell me where

this is I want to show a friend the artical --it's was in Opticaltalk

                                           thanks for all your help

                                                     Bill

well, first of all, the nikon prostaff is a fairlyu nice scope for the money. would not be a bad choice.

as for bushnell, they make some great scopes. the banner might fit you perfectly, and i would choose it over the nikon.

for your application, i beleave i mentioned the rifleman 2-7x33. its hard to beat, and you have leupolds #1 customer service. and i beleave its the least costly scope leupold makes.

heres the order i suggest:

1. leupold rifleman 2-7x33

2. bushnell banner 3-9x40

3. nikon prostaff 3-9x40

if you dont want to spend the extra money for the leupold, get the bushnell, it will serve you for a long time. i dont really care much for the nikon prostaff, i looked through one at galyans, and the crosshairs were like fading away, no matter how far away the target was, and the same goes for the buckmaster.

Are you set on a variable? For a muzzleloader a Weaver K2.5 2.5x20 scope would work great as would Leupold M8 2.5x20.  Both have plenty of eye relief and are very clear. Same for Burris 4x20 scope. All retail for less than $200 with Weaver being the cheapest at ~$120 or so.

please let me make something clear I am not afraid of spending a few bucks here . I don't know anything about scopes , I just want the scope that best fits my needs I know so many people who buy 1500.00 guns but can't hit the side of a barn whats the point ( and I hunt Indiana only slug guns ) and now for the first time this year muzzle loader. I have looked at and through one weaver and because this is the most techanical forum i have found on the subject of scopes i will take a second look . I guess I was concentrating on the companys that have a history in optics ( it seems to be a very complicated thing ) .

thanks for all your help you guys have been very honest on your opions

Bill, I really doubt that for your purposes you need do spend a lot of money.  There are a lot of good scopes out there at good price.  Personally, for your application, I would stick with 2.5x or 4x fixed scope or a low range variable like 1.5-4.5x or 1.75-5x.  Make sure that you get something with a lot of eye relief.  I'd go for a minimum of 4".  I own the cheapest of the scopes I mentioned above: Weaver 2.5x20 and I am very happy with it.  It is on an 8mm Mauser rifle and I am perfectly comfortable with it at any reasonable hunting distance.

I'm sorry, but I don't see a premium given for used Leupold scopes in person to person sales.  In my area they are a dime a dozen.  When buying used guns I don't add any value for any brand of scope unless it is something along the lines of a Zeisss or Swarovski.  This seems to be the norm in most areas that I know of.

Put them on eBay and watch how much people are willing to pay for used Leupold.  It's crazy.

I have bought four new Leupold scopes this year.  None of the local shops can keep a used Leupold scope very long.  Don't see many used Leupold scopes at local gunshows, either.  I would have absolutely no problems with buying a used Leupold, if the price was right -- the warranty is second to none.

I guess I just live in area that is overflowing with used Leupolds.  It just seems that every used rifle I see for sale has a Leupold on it.  I actually gave away a number of these scopes.  I guess I should consider the Ebay thing the next time I come into a bunch of them.

Actually you should just send them to me.  I was mistaken about the eBay thing.

If you are buying a scope to later sell, by all means get a Leupold.  If you are buying a scope to kill deer with and want a lot of performance for the money, get a Weaver GS.
If it ain't accurate at long distance, the fact that it is flat shooting is irrelevant.
