After 20 years of varmint hunting I'm finally doing something I've always wanted to do: deer hunting! I thought I'd save myself
the work of ordering a Conquest, Elite 4200, VX-III, Monarch UCC all in 3-9x40 and just ask the pros here: which is the better scope? I'm in Washington where it's rainy, wet, dreary. I've read the 4200 is the "...brightest scope in the world", and, well, you could go on and on with these scopes. I guess bottom line is which is the most reliable with the best ability in dawn/dusk hunting? |

All of these would serve you well.
Personally, out of this group, I am partial to Elite 4200. ILya |

i would say that the conquest is the weakest of the three. and that says a lot, because the conquest is a great scope.
for the price, IF they have any left, get the closout monarch UCC at www.swfa.com - if not, buy 4200 and don't look back.
they are wonderful, rugged, bright scopes.
good luck and let us know what you decide. all of the afformentioned scopes are great.

From the rainy wet weather you're descibing the Rainguard coating on the 4200 would be a definite plus.

the rainguard coating on the 4200 has performed well for me on nasty days in the SE.

The 4200 is my choice out of these three scopes followed closely by the Conquest. |

WOW! You gentlemen are IMPRESSIVE . I didn't expect such a fast reply to my question. Thank you, immensely, for your professional insite and opinion. I'm also impressed that everyone, at least in regard to my question, is on the same page about which scope to purchase: the 4200. It makes sense. However, after reviewing the massive Monarch sale I ALSO bought the 5.5-16x44 as well. I know a good deal when I see one. The Monarch will sit my Marlin 917 for now. It's a great rifle and shoots about .75 inch at 100 yards with Winchesters. So....it deserves a great scope.
Again, thanks for your help, all of you! This board ROCKS! |

I live in the rain capital of the free world, southeast Alaska! That being said I have tried a lot of scopes over the years. I currently run some 4200's, conquests, lightseekers and a swaro. I'm not a very big Nikon fan and DEFINITELY not a leupold fan so I can't comment on those two. I guess for the rain, the 4200's hold the "overall" edge. I think that crap about being the "brightest scope in the world" is just that however, a load of crap! While finishing some load development at the range with two rifles last fall I really saw the difference. One rifle sported a 4200 in a 2.5-10x40 with rainguard. The other sported a swarovski AV in a 3-10x40. The light was failing, the fog was rolling in and I was in a hurry to finish so I could get back to the reloading bench! I basically couldn't see downrange when looking through the 4200 any longer so I picked up the rifle with the swaro and it was like HOLY $%&()**() WOW! So much for touting yourself as being the brightest scope in the world because this swaro just kicked your butt! I easily could have killed an animal and probably still had another 15 minutes of usable light left through the swaro. Now then, I know that may not happen to most of you folks who don't hunt in the rain and fog and actually; there isn't much difference when looking through both scopes on a clear day. The conquests are fantastic; haven't gone back to range lately with all of them, but looking through them out of my garage door near dark through the rain I rank them as follows: Swarovski #1, Conquest #2, Pentax Lightseeker #3, Bushnell Elite #4. I would love to compare the new Kahles; they are most probably the best. All that being said however, I still have a couple 4200's because of the rainguard and I also like that firefly reticle. Optics junkies unite!

I like the nikon monarchs, I really like the sale prices at swfa, you did not mention Sightron, I just bought a new Sightron SII and I like it - but the nikon sale is the best deal right now.
