This should be a fun one:
If you were dropped back in time to the year 1800 in the middle of the North American wilderness and could take one long gun and one hand gun and ammo for each what would you take to survive with? |

Fun to speculate!
Probably want a shotgun, 11-87 would do fine with copper sabots & birdshot for versatility - birds & big game (include 00 buck if bad guys an issue). Would take my Redhawk with 300 grain hardcasts along for fun. |

I think I'd take an M1a (.308) with a Trijicon scope and a ruger 22 mag revolver. I figure I could carry a lot of 22 mag ammo and kill small game to eat and the .308 would work for anything else.

If survival were the key, and I was to be placed in the middle of the North American wilderness with one longgun and one handgun, I think shooting birds would have to take a definite back seat to shooting big-game animals. The meat gained per shot fired ratio just isn't high enough with birds. (Of course, I could shoot big game with slugs and/or buckshot so; maybe a shotgun wouldn't be a bad option... hmmm)
urimaginaryfriend, To make a decision, I need you to clarify your initial question a bit:

Well, that being said, depending on where in North America we are, shooting birds may provide much more meat than big game animals and are by far more common. My choice of a double gun, solved the problem altogether. But, placing specifics on our choice and quantity of ammo, as well as where we would be, would make a difference in our choices of guns.

Still prefer my shotgun choice with varying loads if as lucznik has asked it met specific criteria. Having rethought things a bit would be inclined to follow Urimaginaryfrnd choice of 22 for the handgun. Very practical & I already have the sabots for the big stuff. A pocketful of 22's doesn't take up much room and gives me birds, squirrels, rabbits etc

year 1800 --Yes it is possible that you might run into hostile indians and need to defend yourself against either indians or preditory wildlife including bears, wolf packs or mountain lions.
You can take anything that you and your pack mule can carry but selection of weapons is limited to two -- one long gun and one handgun which must provide for both hunting and self defense needs. No re-supply will be possible untill you walk out of the wilderness to civilization which may take a year. |

This is fun but we need some intrepid soul to act as judge and pick a winner! Thick skin would be an assett - also need an explanation why a certain combo is the "right" choice.

The right choice is the combination that enables you to survive -- feed yourself and defend yourself from hostile indians or preditors for a year by which time you will be able to walk back to civilization, probably with some nice animal pelts to trade and a knowledge of what the future holds.
