    Posted: January/31/2007 at 09:07

Hello All, Here it is. My first step into the exciting but expensive world of tactical rifles! I have had my share of hunting, target and handguns but I wanted something to do a little longer range precision shooting and possibly even some compitition at a later date. Unable to dump thousands of dollars into a custom gun, this seemed top buy me the most precision for my buck. Again, it's a Savage 10FP LE-2A with the Choate machine ultimate varminter stock, SS 10X42, Warne Maxima base and rings and a Harris BP. I have only put a box of 20 through her but am absolutely thrilled with the set up. The scope is awesome. I can't speak highly enough of the stock. In a nutshell, I love it. I'll be feeding her various match ammo to see what she likes such as Black Hills Match, Fed premium Gold Medal, Remington Premier and Hornady Match. Any other suggestions? The Norma Oryx is pricey but I hear good things. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm looking to get out to the 1000 mark for the first time and would appreciate any input! - Thanks, Jeff

It just seems so expensive to get into. Maybe I should look into it, though. I know it saves money in the long run. Where would I find a list of what I would need and who makes good, quality entry level equipment?

i use rcbs, they make really great stuff, and i buy a lot of it used on ebay, sometimes you save a bunch and other times you do ok, one thing i do think you cannot scrimp on is your press, buy a good heavy duty press like the rcbs rock chucker supreme, you will need a powder dispenser, a scale, a powder trickler, a case trimmer, case lube pad, case block, shell holders, the start up cost is some what high but after a short period of time you see the savings role in, i figured i could load up 10 boxes of shells for 22-250 with one pound of powder $20 for the powder, $20 for two boxes of bullets and $20 for a box of 1000 primers 10 boxes of 22-250 shells cost me about $130 to buy i can make them myself for about $45. let me know if you have any more questions

Nice rifle Jeff. I would like to recommend both 168 and 175 non-moly Black Hills match to start.

Later 168 and 175 Federal gold medal premium. This should get you off to a great start before

you decide on reloading. I would skip on the other factory loads you have mentioned.

Thanks pyro and SVD. I am currently looking into reloading hardware for the future and will be ordering the Black Hills match ammo for the present. That's exactly the kind of info I needed. This is a great forum. -Jeff

Jeff if you are not completely satified with black hills and federal and you decide not to reload, I would like to recommend this third and final ammo to try.

.308 Win. Sierra MatchKing HPBT Tactical Match
168 Grain Match Grade Sierra MatchKing Hollow Point Boat Tail

 TTI Armory .308 Winchester ammunition

  • 168 Grain
  • Match Grade
  • Sierra MatchKing
  • Hollow Point Boat Tail

.308 Win. Sierra MatchKing HPBT Tactical Match
175 Grain Match Grade Sierra MatchKing Hollow Point Boat Tail

 TTI Armory .308 Winchester ammunition

  • 175 Grain
  • Match Grade
  • Sierra MatchKing
  • Hollow Point Boat Tail

Is that the rock chucker supreme kit? I have the (competitor) catalog open to that page on my desk as I type. I was just reading reviews of the diferent single stage presses on reloadersnest.com and referencing the catalog for prices. Great job, pyro. You have opened a whole new world of gadgetry for me and my visa card. My wife will be thrilled. Seriously, though. You are right. I added up the costs of bullets, brass, powder and primers and it would save me a lot of money in the long run. Then when I reuse the brass I'll be saving even more. That's the angle I will take when I bring this up with my wife this evening. I'll be sleeping with the dog on the couch tonight but maybe it will work out to a new hobby. Thanks to all!

i bought almost all my stuff second hand, and that press is the nicest press i have ever used, richard lee wrote in his 2nd edition reloading manual that you can expect to save between 40 and 80% by reloading your own stuff, and you get the piece of mind that everything is as exact as you want it to be, and you can customize thats what i like, i can turn my 300 wsm into a very capable long range varminter, and i can take my 22-250 and turn it into a very capable mid range deer rifle, but back to your wife i seem to be having that effect with people here lately i got one guy in here to buy a brand new rifle last week and another guy bought a bunch of new reloading stuff too. remember its easy to ask for forgivness, its very hard to ask for permission when it comes to buying stuff.

...it's even better to do neither and hide it. I think that's what I'll do. Why else do I have an office in my house. I'm off to ebay now. Thanks

Yup. 1 in 10 button rifled, 26". I love the scope, cheaptrick. Great glass, built like a tank. So far it's done everything I need it to do. My brother loves the 16X too. I bought both and sent it to him down in MS.

I wish (secretly) , that my Remington VS .308 had a faster twist than a 1 in 12.

I'd like to shoot the 175gr. Sierra Match Kings in it more accurately.

My 1 in 12 barrel likes the lighter grain bullets, but is being a little stubburn shooting the bigger bullets.

The 1 in 10 twist barrel is ideal on a .308, IMHO.

Good job!

Thanks for sharing.

44 grains of varget and 168 gr moly coated A-Max is one of my favorite loads. To  get to 1000 yds you need to be using the 175 gr SMK as it retains its energy better than a lighter bullet.

Another good factory load is the Hornady TAP ammo.
Also looks cool with the black Nickle cases.
