I am looking for a scope for a Ruger M77 338 win mag. It will be for deer hunting and maybe bigger game some day. I think I need at least 4 inchs of eye relief. if not I would buy a nikon monarch on sale, but my thinking is I do need long eye relief. I would like something like 3-9x42 or 3-10x44 or even a 50 object. I do have a open mind, so tell me what you suggest.
as of now I as considering a Sightron SII 3-9x42 for 199.00 on sale, the specs show a eye relief of 4.1-3.9 do you think this is being reported correctly by sightron?
my budget is $300.00.
thanks in advance -js Edited by Jsimoneaud |

The 338 is a good caliber for both close and far shots; and I agree with your choice of something between 3-9 & 2-10 power with a bell between 42 and 50mm.
The price point makes it difficult...
The scopes I would suggest looking at would be something in the Zeiss Conquest Line, or perhaps the "Euro" Leopolds (Both pushing the 4" Eye Relief) and starting just north of $400.

Sightron has pretty long and flexible eye relief (at least mine does). It would be a good choice.

I would stretch the budget about $30 and go for the Nikon 3.5-10X50. 4 inches of eye relief is nice, but unless your a real stock crawler, 3.5 is probably enough.

Not sure where this fits in, in US dollars but my son has a Bushnell 3200, 2-7x32 on his 338 Savage. Has put a lot of shots throught this rig & has worked very well. The rainguard is a nice feature as well. No eye relief problems even on the bench.

Tip69, Thats funny. actually I am a small fella, 5' 8 170lbs. I traded a Rem 7400 auto 270 for this Ruger m77 mark II Stainless with black syn lightweight stock, the stock actually has Ruger Written into it. the gun came with stainless ruger rings and a sling. I thought it was a good trade, since I don't like Auto's anymore. this is not my main gun for deer, but I will try it once or twice, my thinking is it's good to have incase I ever get to hunt bigger game like mule deer or elk. LOOKING FOR A INVITE,,,,hint hint. I am a really good cook, Gumbo, Jambalaya, crawfish Etoufee, turtle sauce picante..... you take me hunting - I keep your belly full.

Jsimoneaud,
what parish of So. LA. are you in? Anywhere near Holden? I went through my hazmat specialist training there. I have some good friends who make some really good jambalaya. I help them out by having my wife make her creole sauce to put on it. Makes your tongue slap your brains out!!! You need to post that turtle sauce picante. LOL |

Why don't you like Auto's anymore........... is it because you were shooting Remington's? Have you tried a BAR?

BAR is a good rifle, prolly the only semi-auto i would own for a hunting rifle. between the a-bolt, bar, and the belgian brownings (12 gauge), browning has earned my respect over the years.
can't beat a bolt though. fail-safe.

The .338 is a great rifle, particularly if you handload. You might think about putting a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad on your rifle. This will make a big difference in the recoil. I usually find that somewhere between 12 and 20 shots with full power loads are enough for the day. |

Don't want to hi-jack this thread anymore........ so I'll post a response to the bolt being "fail safe" in the firearms section. |

Tip69, don't mind the hi-jack, but to answer your question, I used to hunt deer in the Atchafalaya Basin with Dogs, at that time a Auto was the best gun to have, but now I still hunt only and due to accuracy I don't like autos anymore. the best group I could get with that Rem 7400 was 2.5-3 inchs and I like 1 inch or less now. my best and favorite gun right now is my old Rem 700 BDL 270 - it drives tacks!!! I just purchased a ruger #1 7mm mag, it is at the gun smith right now getting the trigger pull lowered to 2.5 lbs. actually I have 4 guns getting the trigger pull lowered to 2.5, a weatherby vanguard 270, the ruger #1, the Ruger m77 338 and my TC omega. they should be ready next week, then I will mount the nikon monarchs I just bought and head to the camp in woodville ms to shoot. for the 338, I am thinking I will buy the sightron 3-9x42 silver - with a eye relief of 4.1-3.9, the price is right and I think the optics are good, fully multi-coated too. I just don't think I want a fixed power and I still feel L is over priced.
thanks -js |

JS........ you got to try a BAR..... they are night and day better than the 7400!!!!
I don't know how small my gun could group cause I'm just not that steady.... but it's better than 2 inches and in the hands of a serious shooter, it could probable get to 1 inch.
One thing that would help a lot would be to get my trigger adjusted! Which is on my to-do list.
I think you would be happy with the Sightron II........ I haven't heard anything to think otherwise. |

LongHunter, which pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad do you have on your gun, I see they have many different styles. is that made by Lyman? I also see some post about the pad not fitting on certain gun stocks.

the BAR is a great gun, for an auto.
The problem with the auto's is it's not just the barrell that has to cool down after shooting. The blowback that ejects the shell after shooting actually heats up the action too. Not just the barrel. This causes lots of exceptions for accuracy loss. This is why, heaven forbid, i have to take a second shot at an animal, it won't be with an semi-auto rifle.
yes, for quick shots on a close distance, the BAR is just fine. and it is leaps and bounds better than the 7400's.
but you just can't beat a bolt. my 2 cents.

I am no great BAR fan because of the way it handles BUT accurate OH YEAH! My wife's 30-06 BOSS BAR can put 5 shots in 1.5" @ 100 as fast as you can reacquire your aim.
With selected loads and taking your time it will put 3 in a quarter. Seems to me the Barret 50 is as semi and they are whacking Achmed at 2000 meters.... hmmmm As to heatup comment.... only 22 Rfs are "blowback" all centerfires semis I know of are gas operated. There is no hot gas blowback into the action since the chamber pressure has long since dropped to 14.7 lbs before the bolt unlocks. They eject the hot shell from the action taking the heat with it much faster than anyone can clear a bolt gun. I know (from burned fingers) that you don't want to pick up an empty from my R1 300 WM for a minute or two. I would bet that a single shot fired from a bolt gun and semi of equal bbl weight and both cleared asap with the bolt open, would find no difference in bbl temp. The semi might even be cooler due to clearing the hot case quicker and locking the bolt open sooner. |
