hot30. Nope don't have a background in ballistics just find it interesting. Put together a small xls for my boys so that they could compare the various energy calcs: standard energy Vs lethality index Vs Taylor Value Only "standard" is the scientifically accepted one but the others are fun to look at. Just dump in the weight, diameter, muzzle & 100 yard velocities and the can compare 6 differnent loads on the screen.
Find all calibres interesting but because of my background & where I hunt my own biases are towards heavy slow bullets. Most others are excellent as well and for a lot of people are better suited for where & what they hunt but I'm old and too stuck in my ways! |

Sorry I'm late chiming in.
Dogger, your energy calculation is correct, energy is 1/2 mass (bullet weight /2) X velocity squared. So the size of the bullet is not as big a factor as velocity. Using slower burning powder and longer barrels gives the heavier bullets time in the barrel to impart spin and stability. At least thats what was my dads explanation to me years ago. Math nuts do that, I just like to make sure the bullets hit the same spot. |

Steelbenz. It sure gets beyond me trying to figure out correct burn rates vs barrel length vs rate of twist etc, etc I'm glad we have better minds than mine who understand this stuff! Just trying to understand the simple stuff so I can buy the best load for whatever I'm hunting can be a challenge. |
