What would it be for?

Find a good used gun for $350.  My 300 Ultra Mag was $500 but with a discount, I got it for $400.  That still leaves good money for a scope.

Not sure of the US prices on this but think it will fit the envelope:  for my big game needs, all weather conditions, whitetail to moose & bear - Savage 116 weather warrior (not too pretty but a great rifle), 30-06, Bushnell 4200, 1.5-6x36. Many bullet weights, loads available everywhere; very good field of view & excellent exit pupil at all mag.
God save the Empire!

The stock is horrible(cheap flimsy light plastic) on the 116 IMO.This could be remidied later. The 4200 and savage in 06 is a very good choice. That combo will run you well uner a grand in the US.

Ruger #1 in 9.3X74R with a Burris Signature Safari (I might have spent $1100).  Absoutely don't need it, but it would be a great hog gun, and if I ever go to Africa, I'd be ready.  Until then, I'll be the only one on the block with a 9.3.

Used Rem 700 30-06 and one of those close out 3-9 Monarchs from SWFA. You'll still have $ left over for ammo.

CZ 550 American 9.3X62 with a Burris Signature Safari 1.75-5X32 got about $850 in it. I will use the 6.5X55 for everything smaller than elk. I am going to take the pre-64 300H&H out for one elk hunt then retire it from the field. It will still be shot but not banged around in the field any more.

Whatever deal I could find on a .308 (Remington or Savage...don't have anything against Rugers but don't see them on sale and not impressed with accuracy or trigger arrangement.....caveats are I don't like the Rem 710 and I've had good reports about the Mossberg 100 ATR (Savage-clone).   Scope is really the tough part, assuming I could wrangle the rifle for under $400 by shopping around (may have to go ADL...but prefer BDL).  I would budget $500 for the scope and save the rest for ammo/beer (you said scope rings/bases not an issue...would probably buy TPS through Brownells (since TPS won't give dealer price w/o an FFL).  I was intrigued by the Remington Mountain Rifle offered exclusively by Gander Mountain but was disappointed to see ADL config...imagine they did it to save weight (price ~$799....better to go SPS and buy better scope than $200 scope on $800 gun).

No particular order

Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40

Sightron S3

Bushnell 4200 2.5-10x40

Leupy Vx-III

but most likely I would take a close look at the Nikon Monarchs on the SampleList...good deal would be the deciding factor

Momentarily disoriented...usually stick to Tactical Scope postings....going that direction instead of a good hunting rifle (I was describing what I'm looking to buy in the near future as a second "hunting" rifle)...I have only one option to recommend under $1000.

Rem 700P (prefer .308 but .30-06/.300 mag will work for some) for ~$700

10x42 Super Sniper for $300

Just add decent Piccatinny Rings and Bases extra, plus a drag bag with S-series Harris Bipod, Dewey Rod, small bottle of Shooters Choice, data book, 65-inch pound torque wrench (allen adaptor for action screws and appropriate socket for scope ring nuts), spotting scope, binos, sandsock made from heavy boot sock and rice inside, butler creek caps, tenebraex kill flash sunshade and a case of Fed GMM

I'm getting ready to order a Arms Tech magazine extender to make mag capacity 7...will post results in Everything Goes....the above describes my favorites stick.....with the exception being a Leupy M3 LR 3.5-10x40 ILL MD on top (paid $550 for it on the SampleList back in 2002).

Go buy a Savage 11FCNS (clip loader) in 300wsm, Walmart for 437.00, throw that "tree beater" stock in the campfire and fit-up a Bell & Carlson medalist for under 200.00 more and the rest of the $$ for your scope..  Load up or down for P-dogs or  Grizzly or anything else in this country..
