After being a avid waterfowler for several years, I have started big-game hunting the last 4 years. I hunt pigs and deer here in California. Bino work can be from 70 yds to 1000 yards. I am currently using a 10 year old pair of inexpensive Bushnell 7x35 porro.

  • I would like to make a step up , but cannot afford the high end models.($500+)
  • I like the streamline look of the roof prizm models and the fact that they are more waterproof than the porros, but have not totally ruled out the porros.
  • I want a product with a lifetime warranty.
  • I want a full size model. (I have a second pair of inexpensive Bushnell subcompact, 10x25, but they are almost useless in low light conditions)
  • Weight is also a concern
  • I wear glasses and do not like the "roll-down" rubber eye-cups on my current models. Any ideas?
  • I would like to keep my price inside of $300
  • Would you advise 10x or 8x?

When I got my Tikka bolt rifle, I was advised to buy a Leupold 3x9x40 scope, which I have really liked. Naturally, I am considering Leupold binos. I am considering the Leopold Wind River Cascades series, (roof prizm) and would appreciate your imput, pro or con.

Any other models that you can advise?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Steve

no experience with the wind river optics, but i hear they are not of high quality like leupold scopes. but i think i would buy steiners off the sample list www.samplelist.com steiner is a very good pair of  at a pretty good price. as for power.

Take a look at the Burris 8x42 Signatures for $330, the Bushnell 8x42 Legends for $250 and the Nikon 8x42 Monarchs for $290.  If you like Leupold take a look at the 8x42 Pinnacles, but they are a little pricier at about $365 I think. I have also heard good things about the Weaver 8.5x45 Grand Slams.

Ya say you are looking for a full size binocular that is eye glass friendly, has a lifetime warranty, preferably roof (porro OK), waterproof, under $300., used for hunting 70-1000 yards, and weight is a concern.  That makes a pretty short list.

Burris Signature 10x50.......$369.95
Bushnell Legend 10x42....$259.95
Leupold Olympic 10x50 (26 ounces).....$344.95
Nikon Monarch 10x42.....$299.95
Pentax DCF/HR II 10x42.....$298.95
Weaver Grand Slam 10.5x42.....$374.95
