Howdy all,
Kind of new to these forums, so this is my introduction i guess... Anyways, i recieved a savage model 10 bolt action rifle in .223 for christmas, and i've been researching what scope to get. I can admint, i'm totally lost. What i want in this scope: 1. Deccent magnification (6-18x40 or somthing like this) 2. Large recticle with a deccent eye relief 3. Good durability and workmanship 4. Brightness and deccent quality glass 5. Somewhere within the 300 low 400 dollar spectrum 6. Duplex or mil dot 7. Available at most retailers I've been looking at the Elite 4200's, but haven't really been able to decied yet. I plan on using this rifle for plinking and varmit shooting, so i don't need some 1000 dollar high end scope. It would be really cool if someone could give me guiedence. Also, i need mounts for this rifle. Someone told my father (who bought the gun) that i would need special mounts for the rifle. I'm not sure if this is true or not (it looks totally normal), but if anyone has heard anything about this then let me know. If not, then a suggested mount setup would be appreciated. Hey, if you feel giving you could let me know what scope and mount setup works best... |

welcome, you can get a leupold one piece mount for your model 10, and if it is a short action you can get a two piece base for it, the 4200 is a good choice, i havent been here long myself but most of the people in here will tell you the 4200 is a good piece of glass, the 4-12 nikon monach is another scope that would fit your needs well, both have a great warranty and are very compairable in my eyes.

I am new here myself (this is my first post), but I can tell you that you can't go wrong with the 4200. I have a 2.5-10X50 and I love it. As a matter of fact, I just bought the 3-9X40 4200 from SWFA for about $260. It hasn't been delivered yet, but its a great buy if its anywhere near as good as the 2.5-10X50 . From what I've seen you can get better glass but you have to pay alot more for it.
I'm not an expert, just a hunter, but I think most people here agree that these are good scopes for the $. |

I have the exact rifle you have only in 22-250.....I can say without reservation that you are gonna love it! On mine I've mounted a Bushnell 4200 6-24x40.Very clear optics and holds adjustments well.I have a similar scope in the Burris Signature on another rifle but I fell the Bushy is clearer on max magnification. For mounts try Burris 2 piece base with rings or if you don't mind spending a little more try Warne machine one piece base with their heavy duty rings.

I have the same rifle, more or less, only in 22-230. I have a ushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40 with MilDot reticle mounted on it. For mounts I use a Ken Farrell single piece picatinny rail and Burris Signature Zee rings of medium height.

Great rifle great suggestions. I like the Talley one piece mounts or the Warne mounts and rings, personally. The Talleys are simple to mount and you will be ready to go in any instant. For a little less money, the Elite 3200 series is not bad either or any of the Sightron SII scopes that fit your needs or budget. The later are a bit more compact, so you have to make sure your mounts and rings will accomadate them. But, with your chosen caliber, that should not be a problem. |

I have a 22-250 and put the 6x24x40 Elite 4200 on it and I am completely happy. I took the advice from this board about the 4200 and they was right on. I think you would be happy with it.

The 4200 is just slightly out of my price range. Do you guys have any advice about the 4.5-18x40 Nikon Buckmasker? |

Burris has a 4.5X14x42 (335.00) or 3X9x40 (189.95) Fullfield 11 that you want to consider, of course they are listed on SWFA. Depends on your budget I know

My mistake, i was looking at the 4.5-14x40 model. Any opinions of this scope?
Again, i'll remind you guys i plan on ocasionally varmiting, but mostly plinking at the side of a hill. The gun needs to be accurate, but i don't need to go all out on this rifle. |

4.5 -14x 40 is less than $300 and for the money is a great scope. as i said i have used buckmaster scopes for years now and i can honestly say they are great, i have killed more animals with a buckmaster scope than anyother brand i own, the thing i like about them is that rain snow heat cold whatever they hold there zero!! from 22-250 to 300 wsm!!
