I think once you get over about 60x they start to be classified as telescopes because they aren't much good terrestrially. The objective size you'd need would make the unit difficult to transport too.
What are you looking to use one for?
Here's a few really high powered spotting scopes we stock.

Would a 75x100 Barska give me a more magnified, sharper, brighter view than my 90x MiniMak? Personally I find the MiniMak to be very fun for reading license plates. and its VERY compact. .. |

is it accurate to make a conclusion just based on specifications alone?

No way, especially when talking about that kind of magnification. I'd say if your happy and what you have is doing what you want it to do then save your money.

A 'mini mak' sounds like a 'cat' scope, with a typical central obstruction of around 33%, some are more. The folded optics make for a compact scope, like a Questar, they work well at higher magnification, but they tend to be dim and with lower contrast conpared to a nice refractor at lower magnification.

I bought a minimak a few months ago because the specs looked good. It's really not useable.

Don't just look at the zoom power. I hardly dial my 20-60x 80 spotting scope beyond 30x. I have tried my friends' Leica and Swaroski scopes. We all found the image becomes lack of contrast and soft at 60x. Only the low end products will tout the high magnification power (like 90x) to hide their inferior optics design. It reminds me a 20-140x70 binoculars I saw at Sharper Image the other day. Even at 20x, I can hardly see anything with reasonable brightness. At 140x, I don't even know where I am aiming at... |
