Just when I thought I came to a decision about getting the Pentax DCF SP 10x43 I hear great things about the Minox HG 10 x 43. Anyone have any experience with the two? If the Minox is close in price ( about $100-$150) and better I would get that. Any ideas here?

Skeeter:

The Minox HG is the high grade of the Minox line, in theory it is designed to compete against the Big Three (Zeiss, Leica, Swarovski). I have not seen or heard yet any actually side by side comparisons.

What I have found and read about the Minox HG's I really like. Schott Glass out of Germany which Schott I believe makes glass for Zeiss???  Argon gas filled, which is supposed to be better than standard Nitrogen..maybe some of the people here who are more versed in optics can clarify if that is a real advantage.  Lastly, weight the Minox 10x43 are only 22.9oz and I am a firm beliver that oz make lbs when out hunting. The Pentax is 25 oz still pretty light but the edge goes to Minox.

The Pentax Sp's are pretty much the go to binoculars for people who want good quality nocs and not have to take a second out on their house to pay for it.  I have a friend that bought a pair and they are nice. Personally, maybe I have been spending to much time behind my other friends Leica's or even my Swift Audubon ED's but I expected better out of the Pentax SP's they were nice but to be honest I could still see a differnce between them and the high end stuff and even when compared to my Swifts I still thought the Swifts were nicer glass.

Price difference is quite a bit,  the Minox is $790 while the Pentax Sp is $550

I would try to see if there is a way where you could look through both and decide what works for you.  Personally, if it was me I'd go Minox if you are willing to pay that much money. I dont think you could go wrong with either but I believe the Minox will be a better binocular hens the price difference.  Now if it was between the Kahles and the Minox that would be a BIG toss up for me.

Good luck and let us know what you choose.

Minox over Pentax SP or Kahles.

Throw another vote in for the Minox in this case. The Pentax SP is an excellent bin but, as Acenturian posted, the Minox HG series is meant to compete directly against Zeiss, Leica and Swaro at a significantly less expensive price.

I may be wrong but I believe the only feature not found on the HG lineup (in comparison to similarly configured Zeiss, Leica, Swaro) is a wide field of view. Maybe someone can clarify that for me.

I have owned Minox HG 8.5x52 BR Made in Japan. Very clearly visible chromatic aberration.

A very bright, contrast image with no color bias whatsoever, they also have excellent edge sharpness.

The Minox HG 8.5x52 BR have a much narrower field of view than most similar models.

I also have owned Pentax 10x50 DCF SP Made in Japan. I see very little chromatic aberration at the center and slightly to the edge. A very bright, contrast image with no color bias whatsoever, they also have excellent edge sharpness.

The Pentax 10x50 DCF SP have a much narrower field of view than most similar models.
