I have a medium recoiling wildcat (about the same as a .280 Remington) target rifle that I have just gotten sorted out. I am using a Vari-XII 3-9x40 Leupold scope from one of my hunting rifles. Time to get it its own scope.
I am looking for a minimum of 4.5-14x40 (or larger) but would prefer 6x18x40 (or larger) for under $300. The only ones I have found are a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 and a Weaver 4-16x42 Classic V. Can anyone compare and contrast? I have looked at though the cheaper than VX-II Leupolds and am not interested. I am also not interested in a Simmons or anything that is sold in a bubblewrap at Wal-Mart. Any suggestions? Have I missed anything? They are opening a new Cabela's a couple of miles away and they are having a grand-opening sale on Cabela scopes. They have a cheap line (which I did not even ask to see) and a more expensive line. I did a search here and no one seems to know where they are made or generally how the quality is. Any update on that. |

Welcome, first of all. Regarding one of the scopes you mentioned, the 4-16 Weaver, I had one of them on a 30 STW and I can tell you that it was a pretty decent scope for the money. It tracked very well, had pretty decent optics and withstood the recoil of the 30 STW. I am not familiar with the Cabela's line of scopes firsthand. Hope this helps somewhat.

Unfortunately, it looks like I missed a used Leupold Vari-XII 6-18x40 for less than $300 on the Sample List. I wonder why they keep the "sold" ones listed. Just to make people feel bad?

Hello Harry O
Sightron SII scopes can be found at extraordinary bargain prices and are better scopes than all of the above listed. |

Buckmasters are good scopes for the money - so are the bushnell elites.
The cabellas scopes are great quality for the money - they are bright and clear - made in japan, but they won't tell me where. get the alaskan guide series (premium) if you can.
good luck. |

It is sometimes referred to as a 30 Super, 30-8mm Remington mag and 30 STW. It is very simply a 8mm Rem. mag case necked to 30 cal., no shoulder mods. It launches a 180 gr at 3250 quite easily, and mine was stupid accurate (Bobby Hart made it for me). Mine was on a 700 action w/sako conversion, 26 inch Hart, fluted #5 bedded in a McMillan HTG with a Dec. pad. A short history on this round, this was the first design that Remington was going to use for their version of "super magnums" back in the mid to late 90's. The Remington Custom Shop actually tested several rifles in this chambering but it never made it to the market in commercial form. Later on, they developed the cartridge based on the 404 Jeffrey case as it is today. |

I got a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40. I looked through the "on-sale" Cabela's scope and did not like them. Their higher priced scopes looked better, but I decided not to take a leap of faith. I did like the Nikon. I have had it at the range twice now. I don't know how well it will last, but right now, it seems just as good as the Leupold II's I have bought in the past.
