Hello,
I purchased a pair of Kahles 10X42 for $750.00 Free shipping, with harness & cleaning kit. I could have purchase the Meopta Meostar 10X42 for the same price, although I would not have received additional accessories. Did I make the correct choice, bang for the buck decision.
I also bought some Vortex Broadwings 10X42 for bouncing around the truck, I don't know anything about them, any info about them would be appreciated.
Thanks.... |

It would seem as though you are "putting the cart ahead of the horse."
FWIW, although I have never examined either the Meopta or the Vortex binoculars, the reviews I have read about them have all been reasonably complimentary. |

Yes, why don't you tell us about them? You have them, right? |

They are still in transit. As far as the "CART BEFORE THE HORSE" I was able to take several pairs out of a Cabela's store and try them out. I personally could not tell the difference between the Meopta, Kahles, and Swaro SLCnew in the 10X42. The EL's were noticibly better though...But not $800.00 better. Only being able to play for 45 minutes at twilight may not tell the whole story, I was wondering if anyone here owns them, and what they think.
The Vortex, I had never heard of befor this morning...Good Salesman... |

I recently had the opportunity to try both the 10x50 and 8x42 Meopta Meostars. I did not prefer the 10x42s as I had a more difficult time getting the appropriate diopter setting and the view was a bit dimmer and less relaxed than either of the other two configurations. I am guessing this is relating to exit pupil size more than anything else. However, the optical qualities in general are excellent across the line. Brightness, perceived resolution, color fidelity and field of view were all excellent. Probably the only thing separating them from the big 3 in my opinion is the level of contrast. I compared the 8x42 Meoptas with the 8x32 Leica Trinovids. Brightness and comfort level definitely favored the Meoptas but the perceived sharpness (probably because of the contrast level) was noticeably better on the Trinovids. A huge difference? No, but I was able to notice it. Other than that I could not really tell any difference in the optical quality from one bin to the next.
I never spent much time looking through the Kahles so I cannot comment on them. |

Don't have any second thoughts about your purchase of the Kahles. They are very good binocs. Just be content and enjoy them. For a second pair though, "Vortex" ? Never heard of it! You could have done better. |

If you've never heard of Vortex, how do you know he could have done better? |

Actually, the Vortex Broadwing is a $190 binocular that is very competitive. I recently had a brief look at a pair and i found the view slightly better than in the Nikon Monarchs. Unfortunately, they had a stiff focuser.

I have seen several comments to that extent. I would like to try one of their more expensive models though. I would also like to see how the high end Vortex compare with both the Kahles and Pentaxs. Too bad I live too far from EO. |

FrankD, see my comments about the Vortex Razor 8X42 in the "Vortex Optics" thread. The Razor and the Stokes DLS are their top of the line binos. The Razor also has a stiff focus, my main complaint, but are otherwise very good. To my way of thinking, I feel the superb optics makes up for the stiff focus. I registered a complaint about this to Vortex and they said the focus was improved on the new Razors. |

I saw a similar response over on BF. I have no doubt they will, or possibly even have, addressed the issue at this point. The Razor was my next bin to try in the 8x lineup. The huge apparent and true fields of view is what drew me to it more so than the physical design. I may yet opt for one but it will have to wait until the spring as my finances are fairly depleted at this point. ;) |

Kahles 10x42 for $750 with goodies. You didn't get hurt nor did you get an oh-my-god-deal...
But...
You did get a heckuva good pair of binoculars.
My 8x42's compare favorably with every other binocular that my birding and hunting buddies have shown me.
Definition: Kahles : pronounced "kaw - luss" 1. Superior quality, workmanship, and durability. 2. No regrets.
Just my two cents... |
