I too am a member.  I originally joined while in high school and unfortunately let the membership lapse once I entered college (broke student).  I rejoined about 2 years ago & plan on keeping the membership up to date from here on out.

I support the NRA due to their legistlative activities.  They also do a heck of a job of "getting the word out" when politicians start playing with ideas of altering the 2nd Ammendment.

I'm not too wild with all the mail that they send out but its a minor inconvenience.

I'm a member; have been for about 30 years.  While I think the NRA is a bit radical on some issues, I believe their voice is essential.  The other side is way beyond radical; they are rabid in their zeal for taking our guns.

I also believe strongly that every freedom loving, gun-owning American should be a member.

Hello Cheap

I am not a NRA member, I am not to familiar with thier work.

The first time I saw NRA members was when I was 18yrsold

at a gunshow and they were screaming and acting kind of foolish

in my opinion at the time. I never gave them much thought after that.

Are they a good group and respected or laughed at by serious politicians?

as you know i live and grew up here in San Francisco, is bieng a member a

benefit to me here or to you guys? Koshkin what kind of legislative work do

they do? let me know and I will join.

Like a lot of people, I suppose, I find the volume of their mailings a little annoying, but they are generally a good group for gun owners.  The bulk of their budget goes into lobbying efforts to stop anti-gun legislation and promote pro-gun legislation.  The best way to familiarize yourself with what they do is to stop by their websites: ww.nra.org and www.nraila.org

NRA was integral in passing varyous right-to-carry laws across the country, for example.  They sued the government for confiscating weapons from law-abiding citizens during the Katrina disaster and deal with a binch of similar issues.  They sponsor and organize some shooting events, try to promote grassroots participation in shooting sports, etc.  They rate politicians based on they views on second amendment and make that information available to gun owners.

Interestingly, NRA's current president, Sandra Froman, grew up a liberal in your neck of the woods, San Francisco.  She went to law school and moved to LA to practice law.  When somebody tried to break into her apartment and police could not protect her, she decided she needs a gun and went to a gun store.  One thing led to another and she is now the president of the NRA (and a staunch conservative).

Anyhow, check out their website and see if you think they are doing the right thing.  Look at it carefully.  The last thing I'd want you to do is join because a lot of people here are members.

I can't really speak for the whole group, but the essense of what most of us here stand for, is the right to make our own decisions on how to spend our money, how to protect our families, who to vote for, and which organization to support.  That is the biggest differentiator between capitalism and socialism.  In a socialist society government makes most of your decisions for you.  In a capitalist society you are expected to make the decisions yourself.  By the same token, the biggest difference between gun banners and gun owners is that we simply want to be able to "keep and bear arms", while gun-banners want to make that decision for us (interestingly, Diane Feinstein has a concealed carry permit, but she is adamant about noone else having one).

I am a member.

I remain a member because I support the basic premise of the work done by the NRA.  However, I too get very annoyed by the constant mailings and telephone calls (especially the ones with "messages from VP Wayne Lapierre")  that I receive.  Generally I don't even open most of the NRA mail anymore.

I am a LIFE MEMBER and very proud to be. Also member of SCI, NAHC. Its our Heritage and we have to ensure that our freedoms are NEVER taken away. I believe The NRA is a very professional, educational organization that provides a good format for information concerning our rights.

I am going to look some more into it and most likely join.

I have nothing against the NRA or the folks who are members.

Everybody, please reread the above statement!!

The reason I'm not a member is because I don't believe that I should "pay" people to legislate my rights for me in Washington.

If we have to have folks that we pay to represent us and supposedly defend our rights, then whats that really saying about our government?? And us??

"Govco" as I call it, is becoming more and more oppressive and seems bent on taking away our rights to "keep and bear arms".

And before someone gets on here and tells me all about the big, bad Liberals trying to take my gun rights away, (which I know is true), what's the GOP done for the average gun owner??

Seriously.

I don't need someone to tell the Liberals to keep their hands off my weapons. THAT'S MY JOB!!

It's up to me to say "Hell no!!" Not the NRA's.

I have a NC Concealed Carry Permit. I even resent the fact that I "have" to have that to carry a weapon in a concealed manner legally.

I can't imagine living out there in California like koshkin and Mithran with those idiotic laws!!

My partner in NYC is in the same boat.

They have to play "Mother May I" with those clowns!

"Is my barrel too short, my AR stock too collapsible, or do I have too many rounds in my magazine??"

F$^K THAT!

When did WE tell them that it's OK to mess around with our weapons by putting their laws on them??

Rant off!!

If at first you don't secede...try..try again.

cheaptrick,

I don't disagree with anything you have posted here.  The only problem I see with it is that, whether or not you should have to pay for someone to lobby for your rights in Washington isn't the issue. The reality is that special interest lobbying groups (for whatever cause, not just gun rights) are the primary mechanism by which legislation happens (or is blocked.) If someone wants something done in Washington, they have to play the game.  Not agreeing with the way the game is played is irrelevant.  Not participating (in some way - not just joining the NRA or whatever) is the surest way I know to even more oppressive restrictions than the ones you state you already resent.

I certainly don't think I should have to pay for lobbying efforts and I definately don't like everything done by the NRA but, I know that those who would take away my rights are paying to try to get their agendas made into law.  So, like it or not, I feel like I have to do my part to ensure the strength (both in $$ and in raw membership/voter-block numbers of members) of the entities lobbying for the things I feel are important.

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

I agree with both of you on this one.

We should not have to pay.  That is true.

But our options are limited.

With exception of speeding, I make it a point to obey the laws of the country/state I live in.

I was not born here.  I chose to come here.  Where I come from, laws hardly existed.  I find it is important to be a law-abiding citizen.  If I expect others to follow the laws I should follow them myself.  While I am prepared to try to change the unjust and/or immoral laws by whatever legal means are available to me, I will not break those laws because I disagree with them.

As for law enforcement friends backing you up.  If the state decides to go after you, they will be in adjacent prison cells.

Once again, I'm not down on the NRA. At all.

Lucznik, I appreciate your post. Very honest and from the heart.

BUT....what's the NRA done for our Brothers in Cali like SVD666, koshkin and Mithran???

They are absolutely living like Govco slaves!!

Sure, they can move, but why should they have to??

I frankly feel like legislating your way to freedom is a bum steer. It's not worked so far.

Were barely holding our own and everybody knows it.

I hear you Koshin good points, it is very hard to follow the law when the law

does not follow the law, you know how it is here in the city Koshkin. SF is

f**ked up I think it is time to move soon to another state.
