Optics dweebling here, been lurking and learning. As with a few folks, I'm not starting any fires with funds. That being said, any thoughts on the Bushnell Excusion 10x42. They can be had brand new for $170. Thanks for any input. |

Welcome to the Optics Talk Forum.
Perhaps you wouldn't mind laying alittle ground work for everyone. Do you own any binoculars, what will you be using them for (what type of game), under what type of conditions (weather & lighting) do you plan to use them, & at what distances? What price range is comfortable for you? If this is your first binocular it would be better to start out with a 7x or 8x because of magnification jitters & shakes. Also, a lower magnification will give you better low light capability for dawn & dusk. |

Sure, own several lower level binos, Bushnell trophy, Tasco EXPs (whick are actually pretty nice) Pentax(cant recall exact model). And various others. Low light deer, and I check cattle with them, (ear tags) early morn early eve. All weather, I guess low light is most important. I did see where someone wrote that they didn't think much of the Excursions, Kinda hooked on the general idea that this phase coating thing helps. The $200-250 range. Thanks for the welcome and any ideas. |

Bushnell Legend is a step above the Excursion and in the magnification that you gave it is available in a 10x42 roof prism or in a 10x50 porro prism binocular. The porro prism($130)is less expensive than the roof prism($265).
Here on the Forum the Bushnell Legend has been rated, in the past, as one of the two best entry level budget binoculars. The 10x42 has PC-3 phase-coated BaK4 roof prisms. Exit pupil is 4.2mm. The 10x50 has BaK-4 porro prisms. Exit pupil is 5.0mm. Both are waterproof/fogproof & both come with Rainguard water-repellent lens coating. There is less than 2 oz. difference between the two binoculars. |

I tend to agree with Birdwatcher. There is nothing radically wrong with the Excursions but the sharpness and edge distortion is not acceptable to some folks. The Legends and Nikon Monarchs would offer a better alternative for only slightly more. Also, though I have not personally handled a pair the Carson XM series comes very highly recommended and in the same price range as the Legends and Monarchs. Lastly, a new player in this price range is the Cabelas XT series of binos. Very good optically quality and a little less expensive than similarly configured Monarchs and Legends. There is another thread in this forum discussing them.

If you are on a budget, stick with 8x binos. You'll get more for your money. 8x42 is an excellent allround configuraiton.
