This is my first post on this forum, I found my way here while trying to find information on the design and manufacture of rifle scopes.
I have a bit of a problem in that whenever I use something new I have a strong urge to fiddle, take it apart to see how it works and improve it (and sometimes ruin it) So after a few weeks using my new Bullpup air rifle I have an idea for a new type of scope and a bit of a fun project. The problem with Bull Pups is that to get good eye alignment you need a very high scope and/or have to tilt your head. A possible solution is to make a Porro Prism scope, a bit like half a pair of binoculars, so that the objective can be in line with the barrel and low and the eyepiece offset to the side for comfortable eye alignment. So I am now thinking about making one from an old pair of 8 x 30 Bins. Making the mount should be fairly straight forward but I haven't a clue where or how to make and fit a reticle and aduster. Since the scope will be fixed magnification the reticle could be FFP or SFP. I am using this on a PCP so the zero eye relief will not be a problem. Does anyone know of a resource for binocular/scope design or someone who can give me some pointers and who I can bounce ideas with? So far google hasn't turned much up. Has this already been done? Any help much appreciated.

Problem I see with using a bino is your eye will have to be touching hte eye piece to get a view. I realize it is an air rifle, but still would be difficult to use IMO

I already use a zero eye relief scope like this https://mtcoptics.com/swat-prismatic-10x30-atom/ it works very well with a PCP air rifle.
Your eye touches the eyepiece just like a pair of binoculars. This scope is very compact with roof prism optics and my idea is pretty much a porro prism version of it.

Doing something like that seems crazy complicated and well beyond me. But might be something fun for you to pursue and you may learn a fair bit. Putting in an erector assemble will be complicated. You could also just buy a taller mount for the opic you pictured above. |

I am thinking it might be easier to insert a fixed reticle and make an adjustable mounting.
To be honest, the MTC scope is fine now I have got used to it, I just like trying new ideas

I have found a very cheap monocular on e-bay with a range finding reticle, I might just order one and make an adjustable mount for it.
Seems the easiest way to test the idea.

i like the basic concept of your idea. it would probably work well in a few applications. the details take time as most every new idea does. would love to hear about any improvements you come up with.

There are plenty of prismatic scopes out there that use porro prism and a reticle. However, since the reticle sits on one of the facets of the prism, it is not something you can easily do at home.
Most prismatic scopes do not have adjustable parallax, so they are not commonly used on airguns. The only one I can think of is the russian Dedal 6x prismatic and the chinese-made (I think) ones from MTC that you already have. ILya |
