All I need a spotting scope for is shooting at 100 yards and looking at .223 holes. I'd like to spend as little as possible on the scope, and as much as possible on ammo for practice. What would you recommend?

My knee jerk reaction is to say Nikon. I have used a basic Nikon for years. The top of the line Bushnell will get you there too. You do not need a lot of magification, but you need -Resolution-! The cheapy scopes that you see lack resolution. Expect to spend at least 350 dollars to 500 dollars.

if you are shopping on a budget, it is better to buy the scope from a store where you can actualy check the item. I say this because the $100-300 scopes come in a lot of variations and there are many "lemons" among them. Any 20x should do the job, as long as it is optically decent. |

Nikon is fine. Probably the best optics/price ratio.
