This is true, also. What I have found is that the heavy plex works great at last light in the cedars. My illuminated scope sits in a box. I don't like adjusting the rheostat for conditions. By the way, I just took delivery from SWFA on a 2-7 Monarch and I think that would be an excellent choice. Edited by tahqua |

if you have to use a candle then pull the trigger, they are cheaper and more reliable than a lighted reticle!!

good point. Burris as a new all digital illumination control for the illumination that is supposed to replace the analog switch starting about May 07. Thats on the Euro series only. I was going to wait for that IF I go for the euro. I guess my last big trip I missed shots on maybe 9 nice deer due to low light so I want to NOT have that complaint next season and I want to have a scope that can take the 47-70, and has the best low light performance and (a click against the shotgun scopes) has a bit of top end magnification to allow 200 yard shots.

if it was me i would decide which feature would be most likely to help me kill the most animals, how many deer will you get shots at 200 as opposed to inside of 50 yards with less light, think about what you will be more likely to be faced with.

ha! match. now you have me wondering about reliability. are the lighted reticles really prone to failure? I inferred from the move to digital that the analog knob passing thru into the sealed scope had some larger than acceptable number of failures.

I have a Marlin .45-70 w/ Weaver Grand Slam 4.75 fixed which I set up for shooting hogs here in East Texas. It works great.

Dang, I've been reading on this board for hours now. So much experience and technical expertise in one place is really quite amazing. lots of replies within minutes. wow. I'm about ready to back out on the illuminated reticle. sounds like it is a technology not yet mature. ya'll popped my bubble. ha and all the sung praises of the Burris signature Safari, I think I'll go that way. and since I'm going to try and be a lepricon and shoot the rainbow into the pot of gold the Burris balistic plex looks like the way to go. Burris lists it on their specification PDF but not on the product listing, so I guess its a $50 special order reticle for me. wonder how long that will take? now its time to shop a dealer. Thanks guys!! |

A few comments:
On 30mm vs 1" scopes, there is a thread on that in the FAQ forum on this website. Lots of good information there, so I am not going to rehash it. For your application, mochicken, Burris Signature Safari is a better choice than Euro Diamond due to longer and more flexible eye relief (comes in handy on a 45-70). Optically, there is no perceptible difference between the two. Ballistic Plex is a nice reticle, but it is pretty thin and hard to see in low light. With 3P#4 reticle, as available in 1.75-5x32 Signature Safari, you can use the top of the bottom thick post as a holdover mark. At 200 yards and at 5x magnification it should be about 16" low, which should work fine for your 45-70. Illumianted reticles have their uses, but for your application, a thick and visible reticle like 3P#4 is, IMO, the best choice. ILya |

I am not a specialist, but i would get an AimPoint 2 MOA red dot for that type of hunting and caliber.

anweis, thanks, to tell you my progression, I started with a classic setup, 45-70 and a sweet Marbles Peep. I re-machined it into a left hander and made my own front sight to match. I thought it was the cats meow. With it I can shoot 3" groups at 100 yards in daylight but in hunting use I grow frustrated that the 0.080" peep aperture blacks out to an unusable state in still fairly good light. Time for a change. I was about to put a military EoTech on it to get the 1x illuminated reticle both eyes open plan, when I sucumbed to many offered opinions that I should instead go to a low power scope for some magnification and brightness. I am 50, have had lasik surgery and while my eyes are 20-20 in good light, my vision inherently drops to 20-40 or so once the light fades due to the un-corrected outter portion of my cornea coming into use as my eyes stop down. Some mag and brightness would clearly be a plus. So, I've been floundering in a sea of useless hype and advertising copy written by marketing people who don't hunt for weeks, until last night i happened on this board. Wow, learned more in a few hours than in the last couple months. I'm an engineer and I was totally frustrated by the lack of quantative published scope data I was finding until last night. You guys and gals are great. lots more reading to do.

If you want to stick with irons, Brownell's has some great ghost ring setups made to fit Marlins. I have a set on my 1894 44 mag and it sure makes a nice walk around rig without the encumberance of a scope.
