I was thinking I should prolly have a Colt of some sort or another.....  I'm not gonna spend over $750.  I've seen some pistols for around $500.... so that's an option.   Do you think it matters what I get?  looking forward to what you might suggest.

Just to have a colt or for what purpose?   Target shooting?  Plinking?  A colt woodsman is a fun little 22...... I've seen a few older 1911 shooters that sell for around $600 on gun broker?

I can't say this still hods true for the Police Positive, but a few years ago you couldn't give them away, especially the .32 or .38S&W.
The Police Positive Special bring almost double, and it's the same frame as the Detective Special. The Detective special had 5 different grip frames depending on when it was made with the older ones bringing more money, and depending on condition.
If your looking for Colt DA revolver, I'd look for one of the larger frames like the Officers Model, the 1917, or a Trooper. They're not as expensive as a snake revolver, but have far more history.
Then there are the 1903 and 1908 pocket autos; they range in price from about $500 up to a couple of grand depending on condition and any history and markings. If you remember the movie Patton, that was a 1908 Colt auto that Patton used to shoot at the German bomber in North Africa. They were issued to generals and were marked Property of or some such. They are the expensive ones.
You might still be able to pick up a nice 70 series Colt 1911A1 for about $800.00 give or take. Anything older then that in original good condition is going to be more.
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

I have 3 Troopers. The 6" MK lll has taken more deer than all my other firearms combined. It is fun to take someone out and let them shoot the .357. Then load the 6" .22 MK lll and watch how much they jerk when it goes off expecting it to be the .357. Bandito. Sad thing is they are no longer in your price range.

Ok Wes.... I think you did it!  Another enabler you are.  Big Grin     Now, riddle me this, are the new ones as good/desirable as previous ones.  If yes, I found a Blued Commander with 4.25" barrel for just a touch over my stated limit.  they do Lay-a-way, so its an excellent option!

If no, what are the years of manufacture to focus on (or stay away from) ?

That is a great little handgun.  Used to have one, just like that.

Well if you don't get the 1991 or a 1911, there's always the 1917.

Just a suggestion as one who has done that. Spend a little more and get one with an extended beaver tail and better sights and trigger.

While those old school ones look cool it won’t take u long to want to upgrade it.  I bought one of the basic sprinfields years back and almost immedietly regretted it. I wanted the upgrades. So i just sold it, took a loss and bought a kimber that had everything i wanted already on it.
Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.

We'll see.  I don't anticipate shooting it all that often.  I'll shoot the Sigs way more.  This is more about history and plinking.  Being the John M. Browning fan that I am, the closer looking to the original the more appealing to me.

I shoot in a trap league and really don't see myself shooting pistols competitively.    Do you know if the Competition model has the upgrades you're talking about?  maybe I would move up to it if it does... its only $100 more at a local shop.

If it's a 1911 you're looking for that looks like the original but is still at a decent price, then look for a 70s series Colt 1911A1. It's the same as a 1911A1 except it has a collit style barrel bushing, which can be replaced with an original bushing. Also the price I quoted was for a 70 series with the original box. If you find one, jump on it; I would if I was even half way looking. Which I may be, soon.
