I've been hearing rumors that the US military is currently experimenting with digital "aiming systems" for their ultra-long range hand held "weapons systems".... This sounds very interesting... the sound bite I got was.... wait till you see the technology that comes out of the Iraq war...

My question is ... will it be "Windows XP" compatible?? LOL

I heard rumors after Desert Storm that Swarovski made a military only scope that had a built in laser rangefinder combined with an automatic bullet feature that would move the reticle after you range a target.  Supposedly you could range up to four targets at different ranges then go back to the first one and shoot, then the recoil would tell the scope to update the reticle position for the second target and after shooting the recoil again would let the scope know to adjust for the third shot, etc., etc.

Imagine a scope like that for prairie doggin'.  You could range one at 350 yards then 50 then 125 then 600 and shoot them back to back to back to back...holding dead on.

If this scope really does exist then it would explain the short lived Swarovski 3-12x50 LRS offered to the public.  Could be a stripped down version.

Actually, from what I've heard.... the new generation of digital "scopes" are more like a cross between the imageing technology in high end digital cameras, the 3rd generation night vision scopes, and tilt sensitive laser range finders... with a detachable "eye piece" screen that can worn as a flip down on helmets or on goggles... so there is no direct light transmission from the objective lense to the shooters eye...

So why did that Swarovzki LRS bite the dust? I'm guessing price must have had something to do with it?

You might be talking about the ongoing OICW program.  Here is some info. I foun about it.

XM29 Objective Individual Combat Weapon (OICW)

While an M16 costs under $1000, OICW may cost $10,000. That is because OICW is a single system consisting of a fire control and combinatorial weapon. The functions contained within the system include the "add-ons" now used on the M16 or M4 such as optics, thermal weapon system, and aim light. With these functional add-ons, the existing M16/M4/203 system cost exceeds $35,000 each.

The target acquisition fire control is being upgraded, primarily focusing on reducing weight by integrating the latest laser, sensor, optics, electronics, and material technologies. It incorporates improved, low-weight optics for daylight viewing and integrated thermal optics for use at night. As the lethal element of the Land Warrior, it has been designed to integrate with the Land Warrior, allowing the XM29 to communicate from the fire control to the Land Warrior heads-up display and also to accommodate power sharing between systems.

The OICW will not replace all of the M16s/M4s. The current U.S. Army Basis of Issue (BOI) is 4 OICW weapon systems per 9-man squad.

Slow sales, size and price.  Hopefully technology has improved enough that we will see a new smaller, lighter, cheaper version soon.  The discontinuing of the first generation unit would lend one to believe a replacement is in the works.  This gives dealers enough time to sell existing inventory and some time to pass so it will be a little less painful to the consumer that bought a LRS when he finds out about a new unit.  I don't know anything about a new one coming, the scenario just fits the normal M.O.

Chris,

Thanks for the info on the XM29 OICW.... My younger brother actually has some hands on time with that particular system.
What I was referring to in my initial post was an "aiming system" being developed for long (loooong) range weapons ((338 lapua, 404 chey tach, 50 BMG derivitives, and their various expermental counterparts) I believe that they are setup much like the scope you describe in your initial reply to my first post, and from what I understand they are linked to a PALM OS type hand held device... Like you described, they can do just about everything except brew your coffee.
Just imagine what "White Feather" could have done with an outfit like that? (Provided you could have talked that "good ole boy" into using something so high-tech).

Thanks again Chris, for THAT link...

Its a great read and it really makes one wonder why, with real hero's like Gunny Hathcock out there... that hollywood needs to invent the bullet fileing "Sniper" payed by Tom Berringer... seems the "real deal" isn't theatrical enuff.... and don't even get me started about R. Lee...
Sheesh!!!

By the way ... my younger bro(gunnery sargent, 19 yrs.) just finished his watch as CAO of the USMC's "1st flight" shooting team (Quantico)... while he was the 3-4 ranked shooter on the team they won the "Dogs of War" match.... something that has eluded the Marines for over a half dozen years.... he is now assigned to   " headquarters recruiting" still at Quatnico...

The USMC shooting team shares a range with the FBI, BATF, DOE, and the CIA, and from what I understand ... he has seen some really amazing high-tech (and low-tech) stuff!
