This has likely been talked about in the past, but might as well talk about it some more. The new generation of cheaper red dot scopes are doing well IMO. The battery life of them is a claimed 50,000 hours. So far for my samples they have not failed. I am not going to claim they are as durable as a Aimpoint as I don't believe it. But for a person like me who does not use them for duty or the job, but for sport and hunting, they are great. I also use them with BUIS, so if they did fail in those situations I could still hunt if needs be. I have owned several Aimpoints over the years, but just sold off my last one as I cannot justify the cost of them when the Holosun and holosun re-brands are doing so well. I still own a MRO (which I love), a Holosun, Sig Romeo5x, and a Primary Arms (holosun). I have not had any issues with any of them so far. Whats others experiences? Any failures with any of them? How was customer service, if you used it? What are your reasons for not buying one of the Holosuns or the re-brands?

Reason #1 for my not buying a rebrand: my damned Aimpoints won't break. I have more experience now with newer reflex sights than with older tube red dots. Are your questions regarding the tube sights only or anything red dot? If anything red dot, Shields have been pretty great for me, the RMS specifically. They do sometimes have an issue with a side-open battery slot that doesn't open. And the light source is visible in front of the site, but the battery life is good (all sites still on their first battery), and the light detection has worked well for me, no lost dots in bright light or over-bright dots in low light. I've also had great luck with Burris Fastfire sites. The downside is they don't remember the last brightness setting so you have to cycle to what you want, but the good news is they are durable, battery life is fine, and they seem to hold up to abuse without losing zero.

Anything red dot. Just tying to bring up red dot conversation. Most of mine are the micro red dot like the aimpoint t1 and t2. I had a aimpoint compm4, but sold it as well. Primary has their version of the compm4 that I may buy soon just to try out. From the reviews I have read, they are quite good. I have a fastfire 3 on my shotgun. I think it is sweet, makes shooting clays more fun. https://www.swfa.com/burris-1x21x15-fastfire-m3-red-dot-sight.html Holosun also has reflex sights now that I would not mind trying out. https://www.swfa.com/holosun-1x32x24-classic-open-reflex-sight.html I am really liking the Sig Romeo 5x. I like that it takes a aaa battery vs the coin 2032. If I coudl start all over again, I would just buy those vs the ones that take 2032s. but oh well. Almost all of mine, I have bought lightly used off my bro in law. He is always buying and trading so it works out good for me. His guns get looked at a lot and shot a couple times a year, so very lightly used.

Came across this picture. The mounting of his optic kind of cracked me up. |

That a clip on handguard, so there is no stability to it. I bet that zero on that optic moves with every shot. Its not a great idea to put an optic on a free float handguard, but on that one he went full retard and Rancid would say.

I must admit I still like the original Aimpoints.
A buddy of mine has a .375H&H rifle that he has a great set up for it. He's got Kozap QD mounts (don't think you guys see them much in the US, Czech made and quite good). He has currntly 3 optics he can use: 8x56 Docter I think (maybe a Karl Kaps) - for night time sitting for boar 4x32 Leupold - Uses this for his general walking around scope Aimpoint 9000L - uses this for driven boar. It makes his .375H&H really versatile. The only thing that I think would make it better is if he swapped out his Leupold for my spare 3-9x36 Swaro ;) I've borrowed his 9000L and it is a dream to use, really like it. I have got a Burris FF3 on my slug gun and it is growing on me. Scrummy |

I recently bought 2 Holosun HS503. I like the reticle and the way brightness is adjusted. I like the motion activatiton and that they turn off after 10 minutes with no motion. Will they be durable? Time will tell.

There is also some competition coming on the high end. Steiner has a new DRS-1X coming that is expensive, but one of the best reflex sights I have seen yet in terms of collimation quality:

I am not sure. That picture was taken with a prototype which I mounted on my ADM mount. They are sending me a production unit to play with. It will have a Picatinny mount, but I will not know for sure which one until it gets here. ILya

I have run two non Aimpoint red dots one a vortex Razor and the screws wouldn't come out had to drill them out Vortex replaced it no questions asked. The other an Ultradot which I dont like well enough to have it mounted on anything currently. I would like to have a Romeo 5 cause I heard it turns itself on with motion. Really I so much prefer the Trijicon Compact ACOG scopes I have they just smoke the Aimipoints if you can live with the short eye relief and LaRue RCO mount.

I like the ACOG, but not better than Aimpoint. I did get an Aimpoint micro a while back (few years) that failed... well, actually just had a double dot. As Spock said "for everything there is a first time..."

Maybe you’re just starting to get double vision Dan.
I’m truly amazed at the extreme battery life we’re getting with these various mini red dot sights, even with the dot continuously lit. |
