I'm not sure where to put this so mods move if needed please. I'm going to get a very large gun safe and don't want it sitting on the carpet in the house. I DO want it in the house. I've had a safe in the garage and won't do that again. I want some sort of base or platform for it to sit on. My needs are a moisture barrier. I was looking at the thick mats at Tractor Supply for horse stalls. What solutions have you come up with to put a safe on in the living room? Edit: it is a National Security Magnum weighing about 1500 pounds so it needs something sturdy.

If your home has a suspended floor system you better go under and block up your chosen location. Other than that stall mats may be a fair choice. The biggest moisture issue is always rapid temp swings. If you have thermostat battles in the house like some folk I know, you may have moisture issues anyway. If you keep the temp in that room fairly consistent you will minimize the problem. It has always frustrated me that gun safes don't have a fan vent out the floor. In all the fires you firefighters have seen, have you ever seen the floor under a safe, stove, refrig burned? And if you did it was probably a complete " to the ground" burn where a safe "burn/heat rating would not have been sufficient. Anyway, Brace up your floor and keep the temp consistent and you "should" be ok. |

The house has a foundation so no problems there. No AC fights with the missus either. Water spills on carpet or some unforeseen catastrophe that includes water in the house.

Should not be an issue. Consider, a gun safe is a sealed container. Whatever the condition of the air when you close it is what determines moisture content while it is closed. Cool air holds little or less moisture. If you have a gun that you have had in the truck or outside on a warm/hot day and put it in the safe you have introduced a enclosed temp swing. The ambient air closed in the safe will determine if any condensation occurs. That is just one way moisture is exposed in a enclosed container. A golden rod is simply a heater that is intended to dry the air in the container. If the air has a heavy moisture content the golden rod can actually cause condensation during evaporation. Ambient air is just as important to control as container air. |

Mine sits on several 2 x 4's. No moisture problems with air circulating. If the safe is in a nice room you can put a strip of ventilated fascia where you want.

On one of my big cannon safes I build a rolling platform using angle iron and 500# caster wheels. It allows me to move the safe in the event I need to get behind it or under it. Its in a room that we had to widen the door to get in so it cant come out without doing the same so no rolling it out in a theft situation. Wife likes to be able to vacuum under it and having the wheels allows that, keeps dust down.

You might think about putting some desiccant containers in the safe. I have also read that placing some metal that will oxidize (i.e. rust) more easily than steel in the safe is a good idea. Cut up pieces of aluminum have been recommended for this.
This combination, with a low temperature dehumidifier, and small heater in winter, have kept both our garage and safe dry for over 25 years.

I use desiccant bags and cans to keep rust away. That is also the reason to keep it in the house.

Mine sits on 4x4's but in garage, on concrete. I had it in my basement of my old house with 4x4's also.

I contacted several safe movers and they tell me the original National Security safes are close to 2000 instead of the Liberty versions that are more like 1500 pounds. Yikes! The movers are all about $700 to $1000 for the 10 mile move. I think I am going the rubber mat route for ease and durability.

If you have a few strong backed buddies that can help you lean it over and put a pallet on it then use a pallet jack to move. I've done that and also use cut piece of metal piping.... like the Egyptians.

Myself and 3 others moved a Liberty Fat Boy Jr weighing about 700 lbs and it was tough. I dont want to sound like a wuss but it was so wide it was hard to get leverage on it from the side and tilt onto the dolly. We had to pick it up from the back and then it was too wide to go through a door. What a pain.

My gun safe weights around 650. My one buddy that was helping us was running the dolly as we were attempting to move it down the stairs. He finally told me and my other firend to just get out of the way and he did it all himself. Lol. He was a furniture mover for a few years and i guess had some skills.

I have had a similar situation actually. Back when I have ordered the largeg gun safe, I did not want it to sit on the floor, while the previous gun safe was in the garage. I actually thought to order a special "wardrobe" for it. There I have a sliding door and right behind it is the safe. I actually think it is the best solution. It is in the house, not on the floor and no one knows where is it. Actually, I decided to do so, back when the guys from a security firm were installing the new secuirty system, they advised me to do so, and connect the safe's door to the system.

If you place anything under the safe to protect flooring it should be fairly thin so you do not have the safe tip forward when weight from the door swings open. Ideally a safe is bolted down to concrete below. the structure of a floor varies by where in the country you are because houses are constructed differently. In Texas you may have a floor that is concrete slab on grade or a house built on piers where midwestern states will have a basement some finished some un finished. West coast you are likely to have a concrete perimeter and piers with a crawl space. In any case be sure your floor will support the weight before you drag it in there. Even the temperature swings of a garage are no match for an electric "goldenrod" to prevent rust so don't rule out the garage concrete floor as a choice.

I was discussing mounting safes in my study with my wife. She said "We're not doing that anymore". "Why not", I asked. "We're going to build a poured concrete vault off of your study, install a heavy steel door between the study and the vault. You can move all your benches and supplies in there, hang guns on the wall, if you want to, but no longer have to be concerned about anyone breaking in and stealing a safe."
I just thought "wow, she REALLY DOES love me..." |
