Fortunately in Wyoming they had the rig "winterized" like Alaska! In Colorado you have to freeze to death....
...in Wyoming in the winter they had a Boiler house and steam lines and the pumps and the mud house were all inside of steel buildings! Edited by Son of Ed - September/24/2020 at 15:53 |

Jack London strikes me as a very unhappy person... there is little of happiness in any of his writings...PLUS he was a socialist and a follower of Karl Marx, an alcoholic and a romantic. Most all of his outlook can be wrapped up in his short story "A Piece of Steak". A short yet poignant "Greek Tragedy". I've read a number of his works, mostly REQUIRED READING in school... never really liked any of them. We've always had socialism pushed on us... I've always had great hope for mankind, sometimes foolishly believing great good will come of existence, but Tolkien seems to sum up mankind best "a blight in Spring, a frost in Autumn, and ever he fails of his seed".

Except for the socialist aspect sounds like we could be talking about Hemingway! Apart from the actual content which one may or may not like and is extremely subjective it is sometimes interesting to juxtapose the artist and his work. I admire Wagners compositions while the man himself harboured vile anti-Semitic ideologies.
Makes you ponder the old saw, “can bad people create great works” (keeps the mind engaged though).

Hemingway had many physical problems, some that may have led to his great depression.... he suffered many concussions in his life which probably contributed. London was just a typical unhappy commie/socialist for most of his life, but did probably die from a kidney infection contracted in one of his overseas trips. "They" say one must suffer greatly to be a great artist... I guess these guys truly did. I don't find London particularly appealing, but he did have some good stories... I also like Wagner's music. I don't dislike London because of his human failings, just don't particularly care for his writing style... he had some great descriptions, but the tales were always maudlin. I believe I would have liked Hemingway, in person, London not so much.

Hemingway was also a Leftie. He had a permanent falling out with John Dos Passos over his Leftist sympathies while Dos Passos became totally disillusioned with the Communists after their atrocities in the Spanish Civil War. Dos Passos turned into a Conservative on the order of George Orwell.
Amazingly, Hemingway was great friends with Republican Conservative, Gary Cooper.

Good Lord! I only read English. I could muddle along reading something like a classified ad in French and Spanish, but I am not fluent in those languages.
I have read 1984 and other books by Orwell, and I used to read Stephen King until the mid-eighties when I became convinced that he was mad. I knew he wrote a book on writing but I haven't read it. I started Pride and Prejudice but it was kind of slow....I still have the book. I am also working on Arrowsmith by Sinclair Lewis. If I can finish it I ought to get The Medal of Honor for Defeating Boredom. I got really sidetracked during the Covid Panic and shutdowns and then the Presidential campaign, etc. etc. so my reading ground to a halt due to my depression....heh heh.. |

Just the other day I received this book in the mail. So far I have been glancing at the introduction. The Introduction should give you at least ONE college credit. I believe I will just skip it and enjoy the book. I have two copies....one translated by E V Rieu and the other by Richard Hunter... |

I did read this non-fiction book in one day a couple of weeks ago....about a murder that happened in the county in Pennsylvania where I grew up. I was in Texas at the time and never heard about it. |
