I'm surprised nobody has mentioned perhaps the biggest upset of the weekend... Houston's beatdown of (preseason ranked) #3 Oklahoma 33-23! The 10-point score difference really didn't tell the whole story, as the outcome never seemed in doubt after the first quarter. The Cougars manhandled the Sooners on both sides of the ball. The Sooners may very well prove to be over-rated, but the eye test tells me that Houston is a pretty sound, well-coached football team.

Head coach Tom Herman has done a terrific job at U of H the past 2 years! Houston has traditionally been overshadowed by Texas and Texas A&M in the state, and in recent years by TCU and Baylor as well. Even though they're located in the middle of the most talent-rich part of Texas -- the Houston metropolitan area, Texas' 2 flagship schools have always dominated recruiting in the Houston area. Nevertheless, there's no shortage of talent to go around among the huge Houston-area high schools, and Herman has certainly made the most of the "leftover" talent he's landed.

Which brings up an interesting factoid I heard on sports radio this morning... Herman hasn't even had to board a plane to recruit his players; he just stays in Houston for the most part! While the nationwide average college player's distance from home to their chosen college is around 300 miles, the average U of H player's distance from home is 32 miles!

Looking at their schedule, Houston is very capable of going undefeated this year, as Oklahoma looked to be their toughest opponent. Though shocking upsets can and do happen every year, the only remaining team on their schedule that matches up reasonably well with them is Louisville. But I believe Houston is a much better team than Louisville and will likely be favored. They should beat their remaining opponents like a rented mule. So, assuming that happens, what then? Would an undefeated Houston beat out a 1-loss Power 5 conference team for a playoff spot? What if Oklahoma goes 11-1 and wins the B12? That's very possible. If that happens, I don't see how OU would get the nod over an undefeated team that beat them, despite not being in a P5 conference.

All hypothetical, I know. Anything can happen, and history shows the first week doesn't tell us much...which is why preseason rankings are bogus.

Regardless, I'm betting Tom Herman won't be the HC at Houston next year. There are too many big time schools who will have openings at season's end (LSU, perhaps?) and Herman is the current hot commodity. Houston, as a smaller regional college, has always been a stepping stone school for coaches, as they don't have the deep pockets of the flagship universities.

What do you boys think?

Upset?!?!?! That's putting it lightly. I was disgusted over the game, because I am an OU fan.
Although on a side note, Not one Texas team lost this weekend. If I recall correctly.

Houston did indeed look very good! Congrats to them. If ole Les Miles doesn't right his ship, LSU may be looking next year!

Rice lost to Western Kentucky, and Stephen F. Austin lost to Texas Tech.

My mistake, I didn't catch that one.

Correction, nearly every Texas team won their per-seaason games.

Did you guys see Buchelle's arm? You know who's son that is?

I really liked what I saw with my Aggies this weekend. The mid-season collapses of the past 2 years has taught me to temper my optimism, but this is what I'm most optimistic about:

Early signs point to us having a pretty damn good defense, and we have perhaps the best 2 DEs in college football. Myles Garrett in particular is a beast, but Daeshon Hall on the opposite side is pretty terrorizing himself, as the above gif demonstrates. This may be the most talented defense we've had in 20 years. There are at least 7 future NFL players on that defense right now, and Garrett will be a top 5 pick in next year's draft.

Yep, his dad is Steve Buechele, former MLB 3rd baseman and current Texas Rangers coach.

The kid has a bright future...as much as it pains me to say that as an Aggie and staunch enemy of the Longwhorns. But objectively, I have to call it as I saw it; he had an amazing game, especially as a true freshman!

The Texas - ND game was one of those games I wish could end in a 0-0 tie, as I can't stand either team. I have several good friends who are Texas alumni. I appreciate a little good-natured smack talk as much as anyone, but a couple of those whorn buddies seem to be able to "dish it out much better than they can take it," so we have to pretty much mutually agree not to talk college football or basically anything related to our respective schools, for that matter. Ironically, the most obnoxious of my whorn buddies is what is referred to as a "T-shirt fan." His only investment or connection to the Texas Longwhorns is one day making the life-changing "investment" to "like" them and buy burnt orange apparel. Yet he goes on and on with "we" this, "our" that. When he bombards me with his whorn propaganda, I typically smile and ask him "I forgot, what was your major at Texas?"

I agree. That was a game of tit4tat. Even like the freudian slip there as well.

LOL. Not me Mark. I'm a proud, card carrying member of Gator Nation. Been so since the 70's.

The teachers at A&M were having their weekly staff meeting when one teacher spoke up and said "Do you people realize we have a student here who has been attending classes for over nine years and he still hasn't received a degree???"

Why no we didn't know that . What can we do? We don't want A&Mto get a bad name. I know, one teacher said, "Let's gather all the students at Kyle field and give this guy a pop test. Something simple he can't possibly miss, and then we will hand him his diploma."

The next day everyone was gathered in the stadium. The teacher announced over the PA system, now son if you can answer this question, you will become a graduate of Texas A&M. Okay?

Okay he said.

Now take your time and answer this. How much is 3 plus 4? The student became deep in thought for a long period of time. Finally he spoke. The answer is 7!

The crowd went into an uproar and started hollering, whooping, and chanting, GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE, GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE !

Opinion,untempered by fact,is ignorance.

Watch out for Florida's Jalen "Teez" Tabor this year. This guy might be THE BEST lock down corner Florida has ever had that position. (Saying a lot!)

Maybe he is... in his own mind for sure. We'll see how he fares against KY this afternoon. For some reason, the Cats always play us tough.
