I am building a 300 blackout and I am having trouble deciding on optics. I have been looking at the eotech and am wondering if it will be good at 100 yards? I will be using the rifle for target shooting and deer hunting. Probably not past 100 yards. I have never shot a rifle with a red dot or eotech type sight before and have no experience with them. Any recommendations? Should I just stick with a standard scope? I was wanting to put iron sights and optics I could cowitnes.

Subsonic or supersonic? If u plan on shooting subs i think a red dot is not a good choice. Get something with a lots of holdover points in the reticle as the bullet drops fast.
Also why the cowitness? IMO that takes up from the simpleness of using a red dot to having to line up 3 sights. Plus it puts extra crap in your FOV. I get fold diwn sights but for a rifle that does not have a main purpose of real offensive type duty rifle i just dont understand the point. |

Supersonic mainly. As far as the cowitnes goes. I was going to use fold down sights. I was thinking I wanted to be able to use them if my batteries wend dead. Will it not work this way? I am new to this and probably don't know enough to ask to right questions.

Yes, that would work well. I assumed by cowitness you would be using it with sights up while using the red dot. Some like to do that, i just think its unnecessary for a plinking/hunting rifle to have actual cowitnessing going on. Just my opinion. Backup sights are a smart idea for hunting, agreed.

As far as red dots go. Take a look at the trijicon MRO. I have had one of those for a few months now and really like it. So much so i sold my Aimpoint T2. Eotechs are nice, i just dont like them as well as a compact red dot. Especially for the battery life

With 1x magnification and 2 moa dot. How well does the Trijicon mro work at 100 yards? I have never used a red dot of any type.

A few quick things:
1. Red dots were purpose built for fast shots at close range, that isn't the purpose you are describing. 2. For your stated purposes, a red dot will work, but I don't consider it ideal. 3. For what you describe (hunting and plinking), I would consider a 1-4X or 1-6X conventional scope. 4. Red dots are not precise at range. A 2 MOA dotmeans you will get groups no better than a few inches in diameter. For hunting, that is fine; on the range, it might not be. 5. What is your marksmanship experience? I would like to get at least 1 inch or better groups at 100 yards. Maybe a red dot is not what I need. What would be a decent scope for around 500 or less? I usually put 3.5 X 10 leopold scope on my bolt guns.

Red dot is not what u want then. Swfa 1-4x could be a good choice.

I'm not sure I would do a fixed 6X on a 100 yard hunter. If hunting is the priority, I'd pick another. If plinking is the priority, the 6X would be a good fit.

I tend to hunt from a stand or a blind or the edge of the field rather like I bow hunt so to me the fixed 6 would seem to be an option ( very bright in low light with a reticle that would work once you figured drop at distances), just thought I would add this option if a guy wanted more than 4x but still within the price range. If we were talking more money I would point toward a Trijicon variable or a 3-9x42 SS which would be a neat choice with long range hunter Kinton knob. http://kentonindustries.com/

The 1x4, does it work well in dusk and dawn conditions? I know it has an illuminated reticle. Does that help?

Illumination helps immensely. Yes, it is entirely usable at dawn and dusk.
