There is a pretty major fire on the outskirts of LA going on right now called the Sand Fire.  It so happens that I can see it from my house all the way on the other side of San Fernando valley.

At the time this picture was taking an hour or so ago, it was a 3500 acre fire.  It is about 15-16 miles away from me.

Actually, it is beautiful.  Violence and destruction is terrible, but often carries a perverse beauty.  We once had one move through the Indian Wells Valley when I was with NAWC.  When you are "in it", the beauty is often unheeded… (there's a reason for that).

You and your family stay safe ILya.

Ilya, isn't it time for you to get out of Kookyfornia?

Thanks Ed. The fire is now 5500 acres and 0% contained.

It has moved into the area where my shooting range is. I will be very upset if it burns down.

There is so much ash in the air from this fire that taking a good photo is difficult.

Wow, that's full crown. Last year was my first year on a fire. Tetlin Hills , Tok Alaska area.
One of my dozer bosses was from Southeast Cal. Good hand !!! Great pic Ilya ! Are they able to fight it with heavy equipment or just foot and air ?
Stay safe !

Last year was a very bad year for us up here. This year , not so much.
You are being watched.

It is pretty rough terrain where it is burning now.  As it gets closer to populated areas, they will be able to get heavy equipment in.  Since yesterday, the fire grew to a bit over eleven thousand acres.  About a thousand homes were evacuated, so we'll see where it goes next.  It is 110 degrees and windy last couple of days.

I am going to go out on a limb and guess that you have never visited Los Angeles in July.

San Andreas fault going off and making Las Vegas a beach city is more likely than rain here in the end of July.

Before it rains in July?

There are much better reasons to get out of this state.

It is 22,000 acres now. 10% contained.

Some horses have burned and they discovered the first body or two.

We'll see where it goes.

No before Kali. Falls into the Pacific and Governor " Moonbeam " passes more restrictions!

I thought there was a pretty heavy flood situation about this time last year??? I know some of my friends at Chinal Lake talked about the extent all the way to Antelope Valley.

Cool picture ILya. Not so cool of a situation.

I was talking to my brother the other day. He still has a house just south of LA that his son and his son's wife live in. He was saying he wanted to sell it before the BIG ONE hit, and that it was coming.
LA is one of the most interesting places I have ever visited, but I think of "interesting" as a curse.
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

With the "big one" coming no one knows how soon it will happen.  A lot of people make money making dire predictions, but we really do not have a good predictive model for this.  In geological terms, the timelines we are talking about are so miniscule that it is hard to even guess.

Still, I do need to get out of here.
