I've not been able to find much on YouTube that isn't by Leupold themselves, and I don't trust reviews on shopping sites. I've seen 5 star reviews on NcStar and similar junk, therefore they have no credibility with me. Optically they're the best I've seen in the price range. Excellent eye relief as well, I love eye relief. Can anyone who has any experience with them tell me how good they are mechanically? Repeatable any? Could I dope it for like 400 then return it to zero? Would it hold zero under recoil? (30-06 type recoil) or is it a .22 scope at best?

I am sure it would be an understatement to say that there have been over a million deer shot by hunters using a VX-2 scope mounted on a 30-06. Just behind the deer killed by the VX-2 scopes mounted on on 30-30's.

The VX-2 6-18x are the only ones with target style turrets. Otherwise it would be difficult to dope shots with the hunter type turrets. I have a FX-2 and was just today out shooting it. You pretty much need a coin, screw driver, or similar to turn the turrets. They are not designed to but adjusted on the fly and easily. They are made to just set and forget.
So if doping shots is a big need for you, I would probably look elsewhere. Other wise. I had my fx2 on a 45-70 for several hundred rounds and it held zero just fine. On a 30-06 it should be just fine as well. |

Vx2s have finger adjustable turrets, and you can get a custom dial knob for them if you want. I don't mind removing a cap and turning a low profile finger adjustable turret. My main concern is it is mechanically sound enough to do it. The fact that they offer the custom dial leads me to believe they intend it. I don't necessarily want target turrets, they might get accidentally adjusted.

I used to hunt with the 4-12x40 flavor for many years and really liked it, just about everyone in our hunting club has owned and hunted with one, one still does. They do a fine job as a hunting scope, are extremely durable and I'd buy another if I needed a scope and was short of funds. It is a set and forget rifle scope, not one made to constantly spin dials. If you really like the scope you can add Kenton turrets (target or hunting), they're not that expensive, easy to install on a Leupold and are excellent. Kenton will customize them to the ammo your using, etc.

Yes they are adjustable, but they are not zeroable. They have very mushly clicks so counting them will not be ideal. It will be very easy to lose your zero and lose count, especially under the stress of hunting. And as I posted they are not that easy to move as they are very low profile. But if that is acceptable to you, then that sounds good. Also consider the Kentons.
As far as the VX2 target turrets. They have caps over them so they will not get bumped. I have hunted with target turrets for years and never got one 'bumped" so I don't think its as big of an issue as many make it out to be. But that just my opinion. A bump of a couple clicks a close range will not make or break a shot. And if you are shooting a long shot, you are going to be looking at them to set them anyway. So for the most part, getting bumped is not a big deal. Maybe consider upgrading to a VX3 and get a CDS dial. That sounds more fitting to what you are wanting IMO |

I probably wasn't clear on my use. I'm considering a 2-7 or 3-9 for an ar. For the most part the turrets will be left alone. I just might try doping it for plinking a little at 400-500 for fun. That brought up the whole repeatability question. Midway specs say they are resetable to zero, maybe the older models weren't.

I guess my FX is a FX II not a FX2. So you are probably right and they are different. Sorry for my bad info.

Looking at Midway here, they still make the FX-II. However, they changed the VX-II to the VX-2. Probably where the change came in.

Mine was an older one, Vari-x II, the turrets were as ST described and why I said set and forget. Now that we know it's for an AR I would not recommend this scope.... not on my AR, lol.

Definitely not for everyone, but for my needs a basic scope is best. I honestly have no need for bells and whistles. Your experience may vary. I just wanted some feedback on their quality before pulling the trigger on one.

A lot of Leupold scopes are out there, have been out there a long time, and have served well. Leupold has done a better than average job at customer service. Leupold offers configurations in the CUSTOM Shop that are very nice choices if one is looking for specific features. I have several Leupold scopes and enjoy them very much.

What about the Leupold AR MOD 1 riflescope?
It's supposed to be the same glass as the VX-2. You can get it in the 3-9 or a 4-12. I looked at one in Gander Mountain, and thought it was better than the Bushnell AR scopes for sure. Turrets were better as well as far as feel. Even liked it more than the Burris M-TAC they had in the case.

Great option feature wise. Just haven't been able to look at one in person. If I get one of those I would be ordering it, so it's a bit of a gamble. I was afraid it might just be another cheap pos with turrets to make it look tacticool. Come to think of it though, I haven't looked through a Leupold I didn't like, not even the VX-1.

Why not a Mark AR Leupold if it's for an AR?
