Hey guys, I'm new here but I know a bit about optics. I'm looking for an adjustable scope for my 223.
Here's what I need: -Inch tube -Side paralax -Mil adjustments -Under $700 -max mag over 10, but anywhere 12-18 works I am thinking such a bird does not exist. I don't care FFP or SFP. I also don't care what type of zero set, zero stop, or if the turrets are capped. As long as I can run the turrets by hand, I'm good. But I believe side focus and mil turrets mean 30mm. If so, it means I buy new rings. I'd rather keep the magnification low, because the adjustable scopes running $0-2,000 don't have glass good enough for 20x or better and it's just a waste.

I don't know of any scopes that meet all your wish list items… However, your assessment that there are no variable scopes with 20x or more below $2000 worth buying is totally in error.

Well then, that's just my experience with Leupold, Vortex, Steiner, and Nikon.
I was pretty sure I was asking for something that doesn't exist. If I go to 30mm, my options are like 20 companies and 500 models. I'm gonna go look for an SFP 3-15, 4-14, etc. The usual suspects will have something for me.

30mm takes you from 1 inch to slightly less than 1.2 inches. For the potential added features, not much of a size differential. You can still go with a small objective if that is a goal.
The random inconsistency in Nikon glass I have never understood. I've seen Nikons with glass I would rate as very good to excellent and the same scope with glass I would rate as medium. Not "common", but it exists. Vortex is good quality glass, I've never seen one with what I would call "exceptional" glass until you get to their RAZOR AMG class. However, I believe I can get a RAZOR HD Gen II for under $2000.00 and I would actually like to take a look at their 4.5-27. I've seen the 6-24 and certainly would not throw it away. I have an 8-32 target/varmint scope I paid right around $200.00 for that sits on my 243 BAR and I find it quite excellent. It is useable in low light up to the end of legal shooting (30 min after sunset) and though the edges are a little "rough" at 32x, there is nothing that causes eye strain. As light dims it gets grainier in low light, but no show stoppers… at 20x it is quite "clean". I have a couple of 6-24's that cost well under $1000.00 that perform well to very well in all light conditions, sharp/clear at high power and long range. Nothing compares to my Hensoldt 6-24x72, but my wife spent a couple of dollars more than $2000.00 on that one. And welcome to the OT forum. Glad to have you aboard.

I would add the SS 3-15x42 to your list.

Agree… the SS 3-15 is a superior rifle scope.

I suckered myself into another Vortex. I haven't had the chance to use the adjustable SWFA models. I've had 4 of the 10x42s though.
