Long time reader, but first post. I have acquired a Thompson Dimension with 2 barrels, .300 Winchester Magnum & .243. The current scope is a Vortex Crossfire II 4-12x40.. Nice scope but I'm looking for something a bit better. I've read a lot of good things on this site about a number of scopes. My concern is the recoil of the .300 WM. I am considering a Bushnell 4200/4500, Leupold VX-3L, Vortex Diamondback HP or Viper, Conquest. My price range max would be around $600, maybe a little more, but the item would need to be top shelf to hit the max. I have a few scopes in the $150-$250 range I'm happy with but the .300 Win Mag puts out a beating. Thanks. |

Great caliber choices, I shoot both regularly (my 243 is the "AI" version, steeper shoulder, 10% more powder).
Your 300 will indeed decimate some less expensive scopes. Several years ago Zeiss recommended I not put a Conquest on a light 300WM, they have since changed that tune, but I still don't do it. I don't shoot Leupold products unless forced to, and no one forces me to just now, so cannot help there. The Bushnell's should hold up fine. I don't own those particular Vortex scopes but do own a few vortex scopes and several vortex optics, they stand behind their stuff. Sorry I cannot be much help on particular scopes, but can congratulate you on picking the right calibers.

I've had some Simmons on 300 Winchesters but I changed them out eventually...but they didn't crap out. I've had Bushnell 3200s and 4200s and a Redfield Widefield with no problems. And that was years ago.

I would also check out the sample list. Might be a good way to stretch your dollar and get a better scope.
I would also consider the Meopta MeoPro. Edited by Sparky - January/21/2016 at 10:24 |

IIRC, back in my high school days I ran a Tasco World Class and later a Simmons 44 Mag on a .300 Weatherby. Both held zero for at least a season of being hauled up and down trees. I wouldn't worry about anything on the .300 unless it was very cheap China junk.

I must be honest, even though I am going to sound very lazy and cheap. My .300 win mag has a Vortex Crossfire II 6-18x44 AO on it. Why? Well, I decided to test the scope out to see how durable it was when Vortex first put out the Crossfire II. That was a few years ago. So far, after 4 years of hunting with it and about 300 rounds of target shooting later...it is still there. Mainly because I can't find a reason to remove it! I have killed both deer and coyote with it on my .300 WM, used it for shooting out to 665 yards...it tracked good and returned to zero.
HOWEVER...the scope that I would recomend for the 300? A Vortex Viper 6-20. They are a very good scope for the money. |

Savages are KILLING IT at my local range. Outstanding out of the box accuracy at a reasonable price. (Us Remington guys are running out of excuses...)

In the sub $600 range, Meopta MeoPro would be at the top of my list. 3-9x40 and 3.5-10x44 are nice hunting scopes. other options to consider are Sightron S2 Big Sky and Burris Veracity. ILya |

Would you also insert the Leupold VX-R in that grouping, Koshkin?

I did shoot the rings off of a 300 Winchester once ....but that was my fault!
While messing around with Redfield-style turn-in mounts, I had loosened up the big windage screws in the rear to get my scope lined up better while bore-sighting.... ....but then we decided to move the bench to a more level piece of ground, and by the time we had gotten everything moved over ( benches, scopes, bullets, chairs, etc...) I forgot to tighten up the rear screws! The rear rings left this world with the back end of the scope up in the air!! ( a little levity....)

Odd my signature didn't show up, or the emoticon I picked. Sweet looking set up though. I like savage, I have one of their .22s and am quite interested I their hog hunter.

Probably. Optically, VX-R is not quite as good, I think, as MeoPro or S2 Big Sky, but the illuminated reticle is nicely done. ILya
