Which Nikon and which Vortex? Both brands have scopes of varying quality levels.

What is the application?

What firearm, in what chambering?

Budget?

Tony keeps starting a new thread, every time he has another question. It's hard to follow, Ted.

I think it's a .308 Thompson Center. Deer hunting out to 300?? yards.

Tony...if you want a resolution, stay with one thread.

Are you going to use the turrets to dial for windage and elevation when shooting at different targets or will you just zero the scope and leave it alone? If you're going to dial around, the field of possible scopes narrows very quickly.

With a 4-16 the bottom will be over powered and you will miss out on many close shots or moving deer. A better quality 2-7 will be a more usable scope and put more meat on the table. The woods in Louisiana get dark and close in fast with a high magnification scope. This Monarch on the SWFA sample list has a lot better glass than the pro staff. It will suit your needs well and still buy ammunition to practice with.

It is also a good scope. I love the one I shoot. I have no love fore the Pro Staff.

4x erector, fixed 4" eye relief. The 2.5-10x is a lot to like. The OP doesn't have a rifle with a high bolt lift either.

More magnification is always tempting.  However, for an all around scope that will include hunting under various conditions I agree with a 2-10x being among the best choices.  It is what I plan to put on my .280 though my short list choices are the next price level above your stated budget.  If any of your hunting is in the woods 2x or 2.5x is a better low end option than 4x.

My problem is past 100yds. Having trouble with my 3-9x40 letting me see the difference between does and Sikes.

Spikes and buttonheads have a shorter snout. If you're satisfied with the current scope otherwise, consider binoculars.

I am not a fan of the monarch for the price...there are better options out there and better glass will help more than lower quality glass with more magnification.
