This is from the Nikon website.

Quote One defining quality that distinguishes the Active Target from all other Nikon riflescopes is the use of the BDC Active Target Reticle.  Designed around the needs of predator hunters, its unique open circle design doesn’t obscure the sight picture and makes shot at moving targets easier.  The Active Target is optimized for use with Nikon’s Spot On Ballistic Match Technology to provide shooters with exact aiming points on the BDC Predator Reticle at different yardages and different ammunition.

That depends upon the type of shooting you are going to do and the level of precision you want.

You can read about parallax here.  http://opticstalk.com/what-exactly-is-parallax-anyway_topic5026.html

I have a Nikon ProStaff   3-9x40 and it does not bring my deer in enough past 100yds for me to see if is a doe or spike. I am wanting to purchase a 4-16x44 and want to know if you recommend a side focus or if the active target site would do. I respect your opinion.

Just up front, magnification does not always mean you are going to see something better.  If you magnify subpar glass it just magnifies the imperfections in the glass and you still can't see well.  Good glass always beats crappy magnification.

The side focus is for parallax, it is not about focusing the image.

There are a lot of better options out there than Nikon.  Nikon IMO are not that great.

What is your budget?  Exactly what kind of hunting are we talking?  Type and caliber or rifle?  We can help you pick out the best scope for your money and needs.

I hunt white tail deer and wild hogs if they come in. I shoot a Thomson Center Pro Hunter in 308 caliber. I would like to keep the price around $400 give or take $50.

For your price it's going to be hard to beat that Sightron SII on the sample list I pointed out a couple of days ago.  One other good option is the Vortex Viper in 4-12x40.  Either one will be better than the pro staff you're using now.  Good luck.
