" Casablanca " 1942 Paul Henreid did not get along well with his co-stars. He considered Bogart a "mediocre actor" and Ingrid Bergman thought Henreid was " a prima donna". Conrad Veidt ( Major Strasser ) was the highest paid actor in the film. |

....about aspect ratios....
I always enjoyed seeing widescreen movies projected widescreen on television letterboxed. I hated to see CinemaScope movies 'panned and scanned'.... But, by the same token, I hate to see "Academy-ratio" square movies from the old days cropped to give them the appearance that they were originally filmed widescreen....you can see how much gets cropped off.... Believe it or not, The VERY FIRST MOVIE shown in widescreen in 1953 was SHANE! And SHANE was not even filmed in widescreen! It was filmed in 1951 in the Academy-aspect 1:1.37....but when Paramount released it in April 1953, all the studios had decided that ALL films released from now on were to be WIDE....so SHANE was projected with a special lens on the projector to cut off the top and bottom in some locations. Folks out in the boondocks got to see SHANE correctly, however. SHANE at 1:1.66....where is the horse's legs? SHANE loses his gunbelt! Anyway....Shane has been seen on TV correctly, and on VHS, and DVD....however the Blu-Ray DVD of SHANE will be the stretched version.....so avoid that! When Shane was re-released in 1959 and again in 1966, both films were shown Wide at 1:1.66.... |

Loretta Young didn't like him. She said he never laughed....he was cold as ice. She said he only turned his face so much while on camera because he was conscious of his looks and how he looked on film. |

Alan Ladd made some mistakes in his life.....He turned down the starring role in BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK which went to Spencer Tracy and was an enormous hit!! But Alan Ladd made pictures for everybody and was very canny in his business arrangements...He made several pictures in England for Warwick Studios and got paid $200,000 per picture plus 10% of the gross on those hit movies! Alan Ladd turned down the James Dean role in GIANT! But he was still an incredibly wealthy man when he died.... Edited by Son of Ed - May/19/2018 at 12:53 |

Radio City in New York City Spectacular example of Art Deco magnificence. Radio City opened in 1933. The very first movie to play here was KING KONG! Ironically, KING KONG was New York City's, and The Empire State Building's, Biggest Attention-Getter! KING KONG put the Empire State Building on the map, although it still took many years for the Empire State Building to rent out all of their office spaces. I saw Steve McQueen in BULLITT here in 1968. What a place!! |
