IMO based on shooting adult PDs at 75 to 200 yards with .17 HMR and .22Magnum my minimum caliber for a coyote would be the .22 Mag limiting range to 100 yards or less from a stable position where there is a high probability of good shot placement for a clean kill. A centerfire .20 caliber or larger is always my choice for coyotes so the .22 Magnum would only be considered for shots of opportunity where it was the only rifle available and the odds for a clean kill looked good.

Doing some research for a customer on the 17WSM. The 25gr is showing good results so far but it appears to be a tad early to say it is a sure thing. From a cost perspective you would have to weight your options to decide if it was a good fit for your goals. Good luck!! |

On the 17 HMR, I wouldn't do it outside of 100 yards. I could be done, but not sure how far he would run.
On the 17 WSM from what I have done so far, I would say you could get a coyote easy enough at 200+ maybe a bit.

I'm a .17 hater so, take what I say with a grain of salt. I wouldn't shoot an animal over the size of a rabbit with one....at virtually any range.

I plan to get a .17 HMR for shooting gophers, small max weight 1 pound rodents. The tiny .17 HMR would enable me to double the probability of hits over 100 yards as compared to .22LR Stingers. I did have a .17 Rem and regarded it as a novelty and replaced it with a .20 Practical. The .17 Rem failed to reliably kill 8 pound rodents at 200 yards or so but the .20 will do this. For shooting yotes I will use my .22-.250, regarding the .20 as too little. |

22 mag is not a option, where i live. there are no 22 mag bullets available.there are 17 hmr and 17 wsm every where.i looked at the wsm savage rifle but my dealer said that all his were being recalled.i could not find a wsm rifle any where else local. but there are 17 hmr rifles and bullets every where. so that's why i am looking at one. thanks for all the replies

There is lots of affordable .223/.556 ammo if you are not a hand loader. A nifty handy sized Coyote rifle I have been looking at is the Ruger American Ranch rifle with 5.56 chamber that is good for both 5.56and .223 ammo. Check it out on Ruger's website. I handled one today priced at $369. A functional 3-9x scope and rings can be had for $200- $250. A set up like this puts coyotes in range easily out to 400 yards if your marksmanship skills are up to the task. Fifty rounds of .223/5.56 is not much more than the same quantity of .17 HMR or WSM and some of the lesser known brands may be the same or cheaper.

I only use one of my .223/5.56, or 6.8SPCII rifles for coyotes. A fox, or bobcat with the .17 HMR, .17 WSM at 100-125 yards would work. .22WMR at 100 yards would work on the smaller predators as well. The .17 rimfire is just too little for a larger predator IMHO.

X2. After seeing the HMR results on fox I'd never use or own another HMR. A 22 Mag works MUCH better at close range for varmints and Fox but I wouldn't use it either for Yotes. |

With all respect, i do shoot foxes with my 17HMR. I have no problem getting them down at ranges beond 100 meters. Last year i shot one at 130 meters and he went down right away. Have to admit i only use it when there is no wind at all.

I don't really see an advantage to going to 17hmr when you can buy .223 ammo as cheaply as it is available. The .223 was designed to shoot a 17 lb animal at 100 yds, we tend to select too light of a caliber sometimes.
