If you could choose either one which would you choose and why? Both are same price. One is a Nikon Prostaff the other a Nikon Buckmaster both in 3-9x40 with BDC. I'll be able to get either one for about 96 bucks so its a good deal I think? I'm mounting on a Ruger 10/22. Don't plan to shoot past 100 yards or so... Thanks!

Buckmaster has better coatings. I'd take that.

+1 on what Cheaptrick said about the coatings. Both have the Nikon BCD that is good only if you can remember all the drop points. Many find it to be a lot of clutter that obscures the view.

I rented a rifle at KCR yesterday that had that same Buckmaster on it, except with a mildot reticle. I was kinda impressed with the scope for what it was.

Doesn't really matter, you'll be sending them back to Nikon for replacement at some point.

Why what?? The BM is the better scope than the Prostaff. Both will serve you, the BM has better glass.
What more do you need to know? It's a $100 scope....

A blister pack scope isn't what I would put on a rifle, even a 22, but I was impressed with the one that was on the rifle I shot. It was a heck of a lot better than the BSA that was on the rifle I shot a week earlier. It's not a Zeiss Conquest, but it beats a BSA.

I have a 4x fixed Prostaff on my Marlin .22 LR. I've slayed an ASS TON of squirrels with same.
If I could swap it out for a Buckmaster for the same $$$$...I'd so today. Didn't mean to be pissy. I have a BOMBER head ache and I already am dreading the "silly season". Welcome to Optics Talk.

I concur with the others. The BM will be a step up over the prostaff (if we are talking the original prostaff)

That's a good post. I have no idea what the Prostaff 5 is like. (I'd like to.) Looks like the picture is the original version.

I sent two back in two months, the third one they sent I sold NIB. First one's reticle detached and went askew. Second one a spring broke in the erector on the second sight in shot. Neither should happen mounted to a Sako 75 in 7mm08. Two weeks later, my Nikon Bino's fogged up with condensation on the inside. Never bothered to unbox the replacements, sold them too. Haven't owned a Nikon shooting product since. Heck, I was reluctant to get my wife a Nikon Camera.

Wow. Can't blame your contempt for them then.
Me? I have ran a ton of Nikon scopes and one pair of binos. On everything from a .22 LR to a .300 RUM zero problems. I purposely tried to wreck a 4.5-14x Buckmaster and couldn't. Traded it to a guy who put it on a .270 "meat gun" and as far as I know, he's still rocking it. The Venturer LX bino's were stellar. Wish I still had them

On the other side of the coin. If you've had bad luck with Nikon in the past, nobody is going to blame you if you get something else.

A wise man once stated..... anything mechanical can break......... even the most expensive optics can and do break..... nothing I immune to failure. You seem to have luck like I have. Only thing I've sworn off is Browe, not because I had several that were FUBAR'ed from the factory but because of the piss poor CS from Browe when I had to deal with getting it fixed.
