Hello all.

After strictly using semi-autos for some shorter range shooting I have decided to work on some longer range shooting.  To that end I am looking for a scope to put on a Tikka .308 (Sporter).  I was going to put a (relatively) unused Leupold VARI-X 8.5x25x50 on it, but have decided to get a SS 20x42.

I will be target shooting, working my way up to 600 yards.  I would eventually like to try longer distances later (or so I tell myself).

So I figure a 20x.  That then leads to the next question.  What reticle?  I was thinking a mil-quad.
I dont have any experience at estimating adjusting, so no learned habits to change.  I have been lurking, reading stuff on mil-dot estimating, etc.

This might be used for some distance hunting in the future.  Obviously at shorter ranges, I would have to swap out the scope.  Maybe a SS 6x42 for that.

I was all set to place an order, then realized I should wait until Black Friday, and maybe there will be a similar special with the accessories.

If you can afford the difference, the 3-15 SS will serve you better. The 20X will loose clarity and field of view compared to the 10X or 12X SS. Be sure that the Dials match the reticle for better ease of use. MIL/MIL rather than MIL/MOA.

I could go up to 500, I could go higher.
I wasnt looking to.  I was coming around to the fact that the Leupold wasnt the best for that purpose and was seeing a lot of positive talk about the SS scopes...

I have a Swarovski Habicht Nova 10X42 sitting on another rifle I could move over.
I have used that at 50 and 100 and wanted more for greater distances, that is why I was thinking of the 20X

Ill throw this out....you mentioned some target but the use for potential hunting.  The T3 sporter is not a light rifle, but here is a scope that might let you use for both options while giving you more options.  I think a fixed 6 is good for a long ways out, so this is even better.

Weaver Super Slam Tactical 2-10x36...  FFP, mil/mil, illumination, made in japan with glass to me that is in same ballpark as meopta, zeiss conquest, vx-3, 30mm tube.  Best part can find for just under 400 right now....

While I dont have this model yet (next on my list) its going to be bought shortly once the good old christmas bonus arrives (along with an XTR II), I do have a super slam euro 4-20 and am very impressed with the features.  It is heavy, and so is the 2-10, but on a 10 pound rifle anyways not too much of a difference.

Just a thought.

Doing more thinking and research.

Frankly, I think I would rather concentrate on distance shooting with this scope.

I have 2 other .308s I could use for hunting, or I could swap scopes for that purpose.
That way I can spend the money on what this scope would be used 99% of the time on.
Eliminate low-light performance and close range (under 100Y) as needs.  Frankly I have bought reloading equipment and have settled upon 175 grain bullets to use/develop loads.

So my priorities would be

Distance up to 600Y.  Up to 1000Y would be nice, but I dont think my skills will develop by the time I can just get another scope as needed.
Best Glass possible.
Return to Zero.
A mil/mil setup I think.  It looks like a good system to learn.
I dont know if side-focus is worth extra bucks?
And up the budget to 750 or so.

Where does that lead me?

SWFA SS 3-15x42 is your best bet for this application.

If you can not spend that, get the SWFA SS 10x42.

The Weaver mentioned above is a nice scope at a nice price, but that reticle is not my favourite (the reticle and the weight are likely the reasons why that scope failed in the marketplace).

Ilya just about took the words right out of my mouth. Personally I like the 12X42 out of all the fixed power offerings. It is a suitable option within your budget, but it isn't something that you will quickly outgrow either.

Do not get the 20X fixed!
Though it isn't a bad scope, 20X is exceedingly limiting in what you can do with it.  And on a hot day, mirage will make you hate the scope.

What are the pros and cons of the 10x vs 12x vs 16x?

I see love unlimited to for the 10x, and some recommending the 12x, not too many for the 16x or 20x

10X is an awesome all-around scope, it is easy to get behind, tracking is near perfect, image quality is great for the money, and the scope stands up to just about anything. As magnification increases on the fixed scopes, image brightness diminishes a bit, and getting the perfect position behind the scope becomes more critical.
I don't like 20X scopes, even really, really good ones; it is simply too much of a pain to get a great sight picture, and they are never as bright as I want. I run a few very nice, very expensive >20X scopes and almost never get them above 15X. With a far less expensive scop, the issues are more pronounced.

For a dedicated "1 mile+, only in full sun, only on non-hot days" fixed 20X, the SS would be on the list. I don't own that gun, don't want to own that gun, and have no reasonable expectation of using that gun ever. But if....

As I see it: moving above 10X fixed makes them more specialized, they do fewer things well and do one specific thing better. For general use, 10X, or even 6X.

How does the recommendation for the 3x15 change, in light of the 2 new tactical variants?

I think the answer is the MQ SFP will give me a finer aiming point, and I can save some money.
That then means I need to know what the pros-cons of FFP vs SFP are.

Time for some more research

SFP, the reticle remains constant in size regardless of mangification; FFP means the reticle changes in perfect relation to the target.  This matters only if you plan to range or adjust fire using the reticle rather than the turret (on a specific magnification, an SFP scope can do both - rnage and adjust - but not at any other magnification.)

If not hunting, get the FFP, it is simpler to adjust fire on the reticle.  If hunting, consider this before making a choice.

Given the current discount on 3-15s, it becomes a no-brainer decision.  At list price, I would look at the 3-9 too, the glass is better and I like the turrets more.  Tracking in both will be stellar.

What do you mean by current discount on 3-15s?
Is there one the classic SWFA-SS-3-15x42-Tactical-Rifle-Scope? I thought 699 was the regular price.

And yeah, I see the SWFA-SS-HD-3-9x42-Tactical-30mm-Riflescope.  It gets me HD glass.  But for out beyond 600, it wouldnt be as good as the 3-15 above.  But its better glass.  On the other hand its not like I will be shooting at 1000 for a while.  My current range maxes out at 600.
