I though getting scope covers would be simple but now that I look at all the choices, not so much. I have always used bikini covers, now I want a set of flip ups and there are a lot of options. To the questions.... - Are some of the hire priced ones worth the extra cash or should I just stick with Butler Creek? - I like the idea of see through caps for bad weather conditions, is there any advantage to the amber colored ones? - Would it benefit to have a set of see through with clear and one of the ambers as well? - Which ones have you use, what was your impression, and which to do prefer? (BTY, I have a SWFA SS 12x42 mounted on an AR15 chambered in .223 Wylde with a 20" barrel.) |

Edit kicks in after 50 posts. Butler Creek quality is questionable, lately. However, I have some that I purchased several months ago that have been OK. That said, they are a first line of defense, not a force field. To me, as long as they open and close and keep the dirt out, keep penetrators (rocks, limbs, etc) from contact with the glass, they are good with me. I've not had any problems. |

My response will be worded a bit more strongly: Butler Creeks are garbage. I've owned too many sets to count and, over the past few years, they have become intolerably flimsy. The last several objective covers have all snapped at the hinge, and not due to significant force. A few of the ocular covers have failed in similar fashion, but the objectives fail almost immediately - or my last few have. If you compare a new objective cover to a 10 year old cover, the difference in plastic is obvious: BC has chosen to go with a much weaker, probably less expensive material, and it shows. Old BC covers are great, new one are pure garbage.
If you decide to buy Butler Creeks, I advise you do the following: 1. Open packaging. 2. Throw contents directly into trash can. 3. Eat packaging. 4. Cover scope lenses with piece of aluminum foil or similar. As for the more expensive ones, most of my rifles were the Aadmount covers. They are expensive and they work very, very well. If I didn't want to spend what they cost, I would probably stick with bikini covers. I would not, I will not, I do not give any more money to Butler Creek. |

I quit using flip up covers periord, though never tried the Aadmount. I put flack jackets on all of my rifles these days.

So your telling me plastic wrap and rubber bands would be a better investment than BC caps? This is what I was wondering. Thanks. |

Yes, emphatically. If that looks too ghetto, use a $10 bill on each end and secured with rubber bands. It will cost about the same as 2 butler creeks and do a damn better job.

As bad as those flip- ups are, the BC Bikini covers are even worse. I had a pair that seemed durable after a short period covering one scope, so ordered several extra pairs. Maybe the chemical batch was mixed incorrectly, but none lasted as long as a month, as the "rubber band" parts let go within days, developing numerous little cracks and splits. The original pair failed not long after that, so I can't really ascribe the mass failure to a bad batch, as they all failed far too short of what would be worth the price paid.
In contrast, I still have a pair of plastic caps held together (and in place, on the scope) with a black, round piece of elastic, which was made in the early 70's. I had to replace the elastic a few years ago, but the local fabric shop had it in stock. I haven't been able to find a current maker of such caps. Some have said they don't like removable covers, but I can't tolerate bothersome flip- ups. |

Any one used the Hawke or Vortex flip-ups? I am thinking about trying the Vortex.

My watch band is still held together with staples and shrink-wrap…
I don't notice much difference between the new BC covers and the older ones I have… maybe they were old ones… got them at a gun show. I can't find any flip ups for my Hensoldt...

I haven't tried the vortex caps, but the Aadmount flip up caps are first-rate! They are expensive (around $100 / pair last I checked), but unless you can afford to have your hunt screwed up by poor quality caps, they are well worth the money.
I have to agree with the earlier characterization of the B C caps as cheap (and still overpriced) junk.

I gave up on flip up covers a long time ago and only use scope coat type neoprene covers. I add a pull tab on the back and a loop of paracord on the front to drop around the forend. That way I can yank them off and let go without loosing them.

Man, you are becoming so dangerous to my wallet. I noted that a bunch of the Aadmount covers, at least for the SWFA scopes, are out of stock currently.... |

Update, I ordered one set of Aadmount, love em and ordered a couple more.
I received an email asking if I minded waiting, since Jon is making some changes to the design, specifically the retention clamp or something. I cant find the stupid email, oh well. |

Received my Aadland flip up lens covers for my 6-24x72 Hensoldt today. Adjustable fit… what a concept. The big question I've seen asked is "are they worth $100.00??". If you want objective and ocular lens covers that FIT and actually work like they are supposed to… YES. If you don't care… get something else.
I will most likely never purchase another type of lens cover. Aadlands are real game changers… Next in line March... I'm hooked.

Yup. I now have 3 sets, and need to decide if I want to get them for the Swarovski, or just be happy with the OEM bikinis that it came with. So far the bikinis are winning. Besides, they say "Swarovski".

Terry, be warned, the product mentioned above is a knockoff of the original ScopeShield Scope Cover. I discovered this the hard way when I contacted the customer service department at ScopeShield, Inc. complaining that there was a defect with the cover I bought. The receptionist, Rachael, informed me that the product I had bought wasn't their's, but to my surprise she offered to replace it with one of theirs. Can you believe that? Three days later, I received a new ScopeShield Scope Cover. Wow! That was three years ago and today I have a ScopeShield Scope Cover on every scope I own.
