Working on putting together a 7.62x39 for deer hunting. Shots could be anything from 25 to 150 yards in thick oaks with some easements for power lines. Open sights are an option. Have read about bolt handle problems, was thinking factory provided rings with a Leupold VX-II 4x12x40 AO possibly. Also found the rail on the CZ website, with a holographic sight if the bolt handle is not a problem here also. Any recommendations or concerns to be aware of? Thanks, Jamin.

Welcome to Optics Talk.
Do you have an "all in budget $$$"? I have a couple of CZ rimfires and the high bolt lift can be an issue, but nothing that can't be worked around with the right scope and mounting device. |

Did a search and found some good info, no budget issues. I typically shoot high mounts on my other riles with 50mm objectives. I have a 452 ultra lux and shoot open sight competitions with it, tack driver.

150 max makes a red dot an option. The better ones that turn down for night vision are pretty good in low light.

If low light is a concern in those oaks, the Leupold 1.75-6x32 with the heavy duplex would be nice. The ocular smaller than most other brands and the heavy duplex will be good for the first and last light shots.

Some sort of a tweener scope is your best bet, although a fixed 4x or a low range variable would work well too.
With Leupold, I'd be lookign at VX-R 2-7x33. New Leica ER5 1.5-8x32 should be a good option as well, although for a bit more money. While the ranges you are talking about are doable with open sights, heavy timber will make it difficult. A red dot is a viable option, but I think bolt clearance issues are overblown with the right choice of rings and a little magnification is a good idea past 75 yards. ILya |

Thanks, I think I will knock off some magnification. Should make it a little faster handling and sighting. Maybe a 2x7x33 illuminated dot recticle, low light and a hog hunting bonus.

I love my VX-R 3-9x. If I had it to do all over again, I would have gotten the the 2-7x with the Firedot 4.

I will need 30mm rings, would you go high or medium? Not sure what would clear the bolt.

Thanks for all the help, everyone. Finally decided the Leupold VXR 30mm 2x7x33 with the illuminated Firedot LRV recticle and medium rings. Will shave or replace bolt handle if needed. Should be quick handling, balanced and offer a quick sight picture even in low light.

They used to sell those for $15 when the problem first started. It made quite a few people mad to have to buy a bolt to fix a manufactures foul up, may be why they include 1" rings with the carbines. The story is now that all new rifles will be fitted with the new bolt listed there. I missed the last batch, so my rifle will be here in October with the next shipment from CZ.

You might look at Leopold vx2-2x7-33mmscope not as expensive or VX1-2x7-33 mm. I's great for anything between 50 & 150 yds. I have a CZ-527 carbine with med. rings ( no problem ) with bolt handle. Just make sure of your cheek weld and sight aliment. You don't want high rings. Stay low if you can. |

I had Aa CZ 527 Carbine in 223 that used on a few deer and I had a Leupold 4x33 on mine.
Worked great . The 4x is Lightweight and wont hamper you in the woods and will work out to an easy 300 yards on deer sized game which I way past where I would be shooting a 7.62x39 on deer ! Heck for the ranges you are talking about a 2x would be fine. Get used to using a chin weld instead of a cheekweld using the Factory stock unless you use a buttstock pouch so you can put a piece of foam pad under it to raise the cheekweld. You can shoot well without a good cheekweld though. |
