Can anybody help me out? Just bought a Sako 85 laminated and looking for a scope. Narrowed to the Steiner Gs3 3-15x50mm which seems nice, but got offered a nearly unpassable deal on Docter 3-12x56mm. Firstly, would the 56mm opening sit too high on the rifle? Also, from reputation, experience and general knowledge of these two brands, which has the better reputation for quality? Its a huge investment that i only intend to make once. All advice or personal experiences will be appreciated. Thanks

In terms of brand reputation, Steiner is better than Docter.

Just out of curiosity, out of all the scopes you could have selected in
that power range for the Sako 85, why those two? The reason I ask is
those two are some of the most uncommonly selected brands among the mid to high end offerings. They're decent scopes; they're just pretty obscure and you have to look hard to even find them in stores.
I disagree that Steiner has a better brand reputation than Docter. Not when it comes to rifle scopes. Docter has been making scopes for a long time and has a pretty good reputation in Europe. Steiner is a relative newcomer to rifle scopes, although they partnered with Burris to build their scopes. As for the 56mm objective question, yes it will require high mounts to clear the objective bell. |

Mark, welcome to the OT. What are your plans for this rifle? hunting style? Caliber? shortest and longest conceivable shots? Oh, and I'm with Ted. Have friends in Germany that swear by Docter

Thanks for the replies. I've chosen the Docter for my moose and whitetail deer hunting. Considering we don't do much walking in dense woods anymore, i figured it was a safe choice for hunting in fields and in lower light conditions.
