Leupolds are good scopes. Better than they used to be thirty years ago. And....they're beautiful!!
If you have a rifle with a 16 inch length of pull they're fine!! Yep....get a newer scope for your $300 budget. But, the old Weavers are good old scopes.....the Micro-Trac Generation, that is.....the real older ones are not as bright and are....umm....OLD! |

You know, there are just some times when something is the right fit. Ditto on the Leupy.

Well I have two old Nikon monarch's 4x40 on two slug guns that are pretty much retired.
The old Monarch's in 4X40 worked very well on a slug gun. Anybody want to buy one? I personally like the sound of 7MM SARGENT SEXY!!! |

Be advised, my attorney has advised me to inform you that you must cease and desist on the "7mm Winkle" thing. It shall henceforth be referred to as "7MM EL TEDMUNDO," and it shall also be expressed in ALL CAPS when in written form...to properly convey its inherent awesomeness. |

I'm pining away for another Leupold VX-R in 2-7x with a Firedot #4 now to put on a Ruger American in 7mm Winkle.
Scope first, rifle later. You know how we do...

I know. I almost feel dirty, but I will just have to learn to live with myself. You have no idea what I went through when I put the VX-6 on my list of recommended scopes... ILya

While I do appreciate the allure of older scopes, there is a lot to be said about getting something a little more recent if you actually plan to be using this thing. Several nice 4x scopes have been discontinued (like the Sightron and Conquest mentioned above), but there are still enough of them made to choose from.
For under $300 your best bet is Leupold FX-2 4x33. It is a nice little scope. ILya

Also, Sightron made (now gone) a dandy little 4X in their SII line. I have one on my shotgun. It's decent. Check Fleabay... bet some are still floating around.

I would suggest the Leupold. http://swfa.com/Leupold-4x33-FX-II-Riflescope-P3266.aspxIt is shorter and lighter than the Weaver. There is nothing to be gained by having the 38mm objective of the Weaver over the 33mm of the Leo. The Leupold also has better eye relief, 4 vs 3.25 in. They both have good optics.

Here's one from the Internet. They are 30-35 years old now....made in El Paso....they weigh 13 ounces, made of steel....very good scopes.....in the early eighties they were brighter than the Leupold M8 4X scopes of the same era...I know, I had both of them. Actual magnification is 4.1X....it is actually noticeable in the scope that the image is BIGGER than a corresponding Leupold. Field of view is wider, and the duplex is thicker. You can still look into the woods after dusk....the Leupold had to go to bed.... Find a pristine specimen on ebay....You can find 'em for $100....if you don't like it, you can always use it for a 22..... |
