Can anyone recommend me a good Factory 308 round for hunting? something with a decent BC(no soft points), mainly for deer, but I'm hoping to get my first hog this fall. I was looking at these http://swfa.com/Barnes-VOR-TX-Ammunition-308-Win-TTSX-150-Gr-20-Rds-P71292.aspx Anything other suggestions?
I thought about these, http://swfa.com/Hornady-Full-Boar-Ammunition-308-Win-165gr-GMX-20rd-P78637.aspx but i dont think they will stabilize in my 1:12 barrel. |

Barnes is good stuff and if your gun will group them I'd use them. Try a box and if they work in your gun then buy several boxes from the same lot.
I've also had great luck with the Winchester Silvertip factory loaded ammo.

+1 on the Barnes. I have the best accuracy results in my rifles with the TTSX in many of the calibers I load for, and they are absolutely devastating on game.

Both of those will work well. I too prefer Barnes bullets in all hunting applications I have, thus far, encountered.
I have also had great luck with 175- and 168-gr Amax rounds, in whatever factory you can get them. They will be a bit cheaper and fly true and hit hard.

Well, up to this point I've just shot the gun on paper, and only with FGMM 168, 175. It shoots both very well. I like the 168 FGMM because i can find it for relativity cheap.
How do the Amax compare to the SMK rounds? They are both match rounds. With a good shot i would feel comfortable using SMK on a deer, dunno about pig though, hear they are tough. Although a good hunting round be preferred. |

SMK are hollow points in name only. They are not designed to expand and perform like FMJ bullets on impact.

I know. The hollow point is from the manufacturing process. I thought the amax was design as a match round. I didn't think it was designed to expand

Nosler Accu-bond is another option. Great accuracy potential, lethal on game.

From all reports I have heard, the Amax preforms more like a ballistic tip than solid target bullet. The key to any bullet performance is going to be placement!
As I side note my son and I will both be using amax's on Elk this fall. Mine will be a140gr out of a 6.5 Creed, his a178 out of a 308... report to follow the hunt. |

If it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

I load 155gr Amax bullets for a buddy here at work, he's not really a meat hunter, but every deer he's shot with one was DRT.

Sierra explicitly states that SMKs are not suitable for hunting. I have used them for hunting (confidence is the name of the hunting game, and they do inspire confidence) and with really, really good placement, they do the job; however, a purpose-built projectile will work much better.
Amax expands and mushrooms on impact. I have taken some nice animals with 168-gr Amax from a 308.

Has anyone used the amax rounds on hogs? |

I have… perform exceedingly well. Last time, went through one hog, lodged in a second… both dropped on the spot, nice "retention" with every good expansion. About a 100 yard shot…

I've had the opposite experience with the amax. I shot a 140# doe at 225yds and had the same entrance as exit on her when I finally tracked her down from bleeding out. No expansion at all, had it not been for the hear shot she'd have probably survived it.
Accubonds are another great round. They recently announced a long range accubond bullet that I'm curious about.....

On the subject of match bullets for hunting, Hornady also states the amax are not recommended for hunting. But a ton of people use them, and seem to use them successfully even for tougher game.
(note, this wasn't to criticize anyone for using them on game, just an observation) |

The Hornady .308 150gr SST Superformance is a very good hunting round for deer. In fact several of my friends who use a .308, myself included, who handload, can't beat the factory load for speed. Hornady use a special mix of powders for their Superformance rounds and they aren't telling.http://www.hornady.com/store/308-Win-150-gr-SST-Superformance/ The SST 150gr does a lot of meat damage at the shorter ranges though, so that's something to consider. Barnes make a good bullet, although very expensive. I prefer the Barnes TTSX in 130gr to the TTSX 150gr as the former always exits anyway. The Nosler 150gr Accubond has given us mixed results and I think it's a little too hard for deer at .308 velocities, especially out further. A friend swears by the 180gr Accubond in his .338 Federal though. We hunt all year round here as there is no closed deer so we get to shoot a lot of deer and wild boar and I would have to say that there is nothing wrong with a quality lead tipped 150gr or 165gr bullet in .308 such as the Hornady Interlock SP or Sierra Gameking. Don't know if those bullets are available in factory rounds anymore. |

All year should be illegal cuz I can't do that.
Wish I could do the same. All I and the Mrs. shoot is Superformance because it works for where we hunt and what we hunt and it performs in our rifles. |
