Topic: SWFA SS batteries Posted: June/02/2015 at 10:45 |
I have the 1-6x SS. I never remember to turn the illum off and therefore eat batteries. So i went to my local wal mart and picked up a couple. I noticed the SWFA battery said lithium on it and the energizer did not. Is there any difference or am i just burnin band width bringing this up?

I believe all CR2032 batts are lithium.

I am guessing you bought this battery (like me)

I believe it is lithium although I don't know why it does't say so on the battery.

Same battery. I have been looking on the bay at rechargable 2032 bats. Some are 3v and some are 3.6v. So i am guessing that that extra .6 or about 25% more voltage will destroy the emitter in these SWFA optics?
Am planning to go rechargable because of the short life of these batteries in these scopes combined with my inability to remember to shut them off. I have just been hesitant as to which voltage to get.
What say ye?

Two things:
1. Go to a battery specialty store or your favorite online outlet and buy lots of 2032s. 2. Even if you remember to shut off the illumination, the SS scopes still eat batteries. But, they put in an "extra battery" compartment, so I take my battery out and put it in the extra battery compartment when the gun is not in use.
I would not advise running a 3.6V in a system designed for 3. Also, rechargeables have never been as great in use as they are in expectation - at least for me - so I wouldn't go that route. Buy several (they are cheaper in 5s) and keep them around. And don't keep one in the scope.

Thank you for the input sir. Curious, why not keep one in the scope?

It is my experience, and it might be just mine - my 1-4 is a very early production - that the scope drains battery even when the power to the scope is off. I have had batteries die in a few days, even with the illumination off the entire time.
That said, it is an easily addressed problem, and is still a great scope for the price.

I have never noticed this with my 1-6x that i bought black friday.
Every time i noticed dead battery, i noticed that the knob was already in the on position when i initially turned the illum on.
I thought you were going to tell me the batteries leak and destroy the device.

I have a couple of scopes that will drain batteries even with illumination off. I also have an infra-red illuminator that has barely more time off than on. Don't put batteries in until ready to use, remove immediately after.Even states it in the user manual.

Did not notice any manual with my 1-6x. I think this is good advice. I saw 36 batteries on the bay for 21 bucks. Think these might be worth getting? May just do some testing if the batteries are cheap enuf.

My 1-4 SS doesn't have a problem with eating batteries, but that illuminator on that ATN goes through them like a 6 year old and M&Ms even when turned off.

My 1-6 I've only had "ON" for about 4 continuous hours. Worked the next day, though.

My 1-6 is mounted on a 7.62x39 AR upper. I thought I removed the battery the last time I used it… I just discovered I did not. Still perfect operation. The last time I used that upper was approximately 4 months ago.
I've not replaced the battery since I got the scope. I'd say there is no discharge issue with this scope.

Guys I'd be apprehensive about ebay or internet coin batteries. the better lithium coin cells hold charge for well over a year but cheap ones don't. buy from a reputable source and a known brand. With a little shopping you can find great deals.

Sorry for the delayed reply.... I buy in volume from electronics suppliers like Digi-key, Allied Electronics or Mouser Electronics since I stock for a electronics lab. However, try and think of the highest volume battery sellers... Wal-Mart, Toys r Us, Target and don't flinch but Radio Shack. Also larger Camera shops ...but they seldom have the best prices... Now that most battery packaging has 'use by' dates you can quickly get an idea if the stock has been sitting around for a while.

I found them on Amazon for a pretty good price, and I get mine from Batterys Plus most of the time.
As I said before, my experience is based on a very early production 1-4X, I do not have a 1-6X SS. I had a few 5-20 SS for awhile and, because of the experience with the 1-4X, I didn't keep batteries in it.

I have two 5-20s on back order right now. I plan to also get a 1-4 so in the end i will have a slight investment in this system. As of now my 1-6 has no consumption problems as long as i remember to turn it off before storage.
Does anyone have any specific brand or model of battery to advise?

We use 2032 in all our alarm controllers/panic buttoms where I work. They are also used on all computer motherboards. I have several scopes that use them, so I go through a lot of them.
I have always bought either Energizer, Duracell, Sony, or Panasonic. In my experience all those seem to work well for the uses I listed above.
Those brands are all for sale on Amazon, for good prices. If you buy 10 or more at a time from an online retailer the prices are pretty good. If you buy one or two from the local store, they are way over priced IMO.
