Need a good hunting/low light scope for a Remington Model 7 in 260. I am thinking the 40mm might be too big for this small rifle. What are some good options in the 30mm range?

As much as it pains me. I have to give a nod to the Leupold VX-R 2-7X33. Comes in several reticle options and with Firedot.

I would like to stay under $500. I thought about kicking in extra $$ for the 3-9x36mm Swarovski if it would make a big difference from other options

A Leupold VX-3 2.5- 8x @ 11.4 oz. or a VX-3 3.5-10x @ 12.6 ounces are both options within your budget. I have an older Vari-X III 2.5-8x that survived a horse wreck that took out the rifle, has been on several rifles, in and out of scabbards and generally worked hard. It still works great and is pretty hard to beat for the money.

Low light is as much about the reticle as it is about the optics with modern scopes. I would lean toward Leupold VX-R 2-7x32. VX-3 2.5-8x36 has a little of aan advantage due to a larger object8ve, but VX-R has a better reticle and illumination. ILya |

I agree with the VX-R. All of my standard duplex Leupolds have always been lacking in low light performance. Especially when shooting into cover.
Though the 2-7 VX-R is a 30mm tube, it is still a compact scope that won't dwarf the little M7. I was actually looking to replace the 3-9x40 Monarch UCC on my .260 M7. The 3-9 Swarovski with the 4A reticle was my first choice. But the VX-R mentioned has my interest.

Good choice. I've been very impressed with mine. I'd opt for the Firedot 4 option.

Will the 33mm objective size work for you or is that too large for your rifle? recently, I have found that some 24mm objective lens capture more light than 42mm lenses. It's all about the glass and the reticle in my mind.

He could, but why would he? It is a little ungainly as a paperweight and not really suitable for much else. ILya

33mm would be perfect for the model 7. I have a 24mm on my AR that I really like. Thanks!! |
